The Wallpaper Has Started Molting

A decorator restoring a seaside boarding house discovers that its wallpaper sheds in a perfect human shape. Every new layer remembers one guest the owner has forgotten.

ImagineYourBook writes a fresh draft from this idea.

How it begins

The wallpaper came off in the shape of a man.

Iris stopped pulling.

The head had separated cleanly around a rose in the pattern. Two narrow arms hung from the strip. At the bottom, the paper divided into legs.

It lay on the floor as if it had been waiting to sit down.

She looked at the blade in her hand.

Straight edge.

No curve.

Mr. Venn appeared at the doorway with tea.

"Old paste," he said.

She had not asked.

The boarding house smelled of salt, warm dust and the lemon polish he used on every surface he could not afford to replace.

Iris had agreed to restore the first floor before the summer bookings began.

There were no bookings yet.

She looked at the wall.

Beneath the floral paper lay a darker pattern: thin green lines enclosing a small painted door.

The door did not appear on the plan.

"What was this room used for?"

"Guests."

"Which guests?"

Mr. Venn set down the tea.

Outside, a gull struck the window with one wing, recovered and flew on.

The paper figure moved in the draft.

Only slightly.

Enough for Iris to put down the blade.

She photographed the wall.

On her phone screen, a man stood beside the painted door.

In the room, there was only wallpaper.

Mr. Venn reached toward the phone.

"Sometimes the light does that."

Iris moved it out of reach.

The man in the photograph wore a coat she recognized from an old seaside style, but his shoes were modern.

Blue work shoes.

The same kind she had left beneath the stairs.

She looked down.

Her own shoes were still on her feet.

On the wall, the painted door had opened a fraction.

From the narrow dark gap came the dry, intimate sound of somebody folding paper.

Mr. Venn picked up the untouched tea.

"Best leave that layer," he said.

Iris turned the work light toward the door.

Outline and characters

Develop this idea

A gothic house-horror idea becomes unsettling through a rule readers can observe. Let each wallpaper layer reveal a specific alteration, then escalate from old guests to something Iris recognizes as hers. The owner should have a human reason to conceal the past, even if the house's behavior remains unexplained. Keep the imagery precise instead of graphic. For your own version, choose another repeated decorative surface and make restoration threaten the story a building has been taught to tell.

  1. Iris removes wallpaper that falls in a human shape
  2. The pattern underneath contains a room absent from the floor plan
  3. Gareth denies remembering a guest associated with the shape
  4. More layers reveal different vanished visitors
  5. Iris finds repairs made to erase names rather than damage
  6. The house begins shedding details from Iris's own belongings
  7. A former employee admits the owners used renovations to conceal disappearances
  8. Iris records the layers before the house can absorb them again
  9. She opens the sealed room in front of outside witnesses
  10. The house stops shedding only after its missing guests are named
Characters
  • Iris Hale, 36. Decorator restoring wallpaper that sheds human-shaped layers
  • Gareth Venn, 71. Boarding-house owner whose guest records contain deliberate gaps
Series possibilities
  • Iris is hired to restore a mural whose figures have changed places since the building was abandoned.

Make it your kind of story.
