We Agreed Never to Meet Again
A conference interpreter returns to the hotel where she once helped conceal an accident. Five former strangers have booked the same room for the same night, each claiming she invited them.
ImagineYourBook writes a fresh draft from this idea.
How it begins
Room 614 had been made up for one guest.
There were five of us waiting outside it.
Elena recognized the others in stages. A younger man's nervous hands had become an older man's expensive watch. A woman who had once worn a wedding ring now rubbed the pale place it had left.
Nobody spoke.
At the far end of the corridor, an ice machine rattled.
"You invited us," the woman said at last.
"No," Elena replied.
The man nearest the door laughed once.
"Very good. We can all keep pretending."
He held up an email. Elena's name appeared beneath three short sentences.
One night. Same room. We finish this.
She took out her phone and showed him her own invitation.
His laughter stopped.
The fifth person had brought a suitcase. She kept it upright between her knees as though it might protect her from an accident.
"We agreed," she whispered.
Elena knew what came next.
They had said it in this corridor seventeen years earlier, standing beneath a faulty light while someone cried behind a closed service door.
We agreed never to meet again.
The room door opened.
A maintenance man looked out.
"Sorry," he said. "Didn't realize you were here."
His uniform bore the hotel's new logo. His face was unfamiliar.
"Who booked this room?" Elena asked.
He glanced at the key cards in their hands.
"According to the system, you did."
"All of us?"
"One name. Five cards."
He stepped aside.
On the bed lay five white towels, folded into neat squares.
On each towel sat an envelope.
Elena could see the first photograph without opening anything.
A service corridor. A broken glass. The edge of a shoe.
The maintenance man looked from the photograph to her face.
Elena had translated difficult silences before. This one needed no language she knew.
"I wondered when somebody would come back," he said.

Outline and characters
Develop this idea
Give every witness a distinct reason for joining the original concealment, including Elena, so guilt is more interesting than a single hidden villain. The hotel layout should remain consistent enough to support a fair reconstruction. An interpreter's attention to omissions and phrasing can drive discoveries. Resolve the current coercion separately from the ethical consequences of what the group did years earlier.
- Elena receives a booking for the room where an accident was concealed
- Five former witnesses arrive with invitations bearing her name
- She refuses their assumption that she organized the meeting
- Gus reveals a sealed maintenance report from the original night
- The group reconstructs who moved through each service corridor
- An invitation exposes the financial benefit one witness received
- A staged emergency separates them from outside help
- Elena records each account before the organizer can coordinate another lie
- They uncover the survivor whose identity the hotel suppressed
- Elena makes a public statement accepting her own part in the concealment
