Every Suspect Brought the Same Cake

At a memorial for a notorious matchmaker, seven strangers arrive with identical cakes from a recipe that was never written down.

How it begins

The first cake was touching.

The second was a coincidence.

By the seventh, Priya had put down her tea.

They stood in a neat row beneath the photograph of the deceased: ivory icing, sugared violets, a ring of dark cherries and one deliberate gap where a slice should have been.

No two home bakers made a cake exactly alike. Priya had judged enough village competitions to regard this as a law more dependable than gravity.

These seven had the same flaw.

A small crescent of exposed sponge at the base.

"Did she ask everyone to bring one?" Priya whispered.

Felix Dunn shook his head.

His mother's memorial had already exhausted him. He wore a suit that fitted his shoulders and nothing else about the occasion.

"She never gave anybody the recipe."

"Perhaps they bought them."

"From where?"

A reasonable question. The house stood beyond the last village, and the nearest bakery considered a cherry on top to be an adventurous commitment.

Priya approached the table.

The guests watched her with the anxious attention normally reserved for judges and bomb disposal.

"I'm only looking," she said.

Nobody relaxed.

She recognized the scent beneath the icing. Orange flower water. Toasted cardamom. Something sharper.

Her eyes moved along the row.

The fifth cake had arrived cold enough to mist its silver plate.

The sixth had no scent at all.

At the far end, a woman in green gloves reached for a serving knife.

"Shall we begin?"

Felix caught her wrist.

"Mother hated people cutting the cake before everyone arrived."

The woman looked toward the door.

For the first time, Priya wondered whether seven was the intended number.

Above the mantelpiece, the late matchmaker smiled from her frame. She had spent forty years introducing people who claimed to have nothing in common.

Priya examined the gaps in the cakes.

Each missing slice pointed in a different direction.

Together, they faced seven guests.

Then the doorbell rang.

The woman in green dropped the knife.
