The Woman Who Passed My Test

A psychologist designs a test that detects fabricated memories. Every person passes except the woman who invented it.

How it begins

The machine said I had invented my seventh birthday.

I laughed because the audience expected me to.

Behind the glass, Toby did not laugh.

"False positive," I said.

The machine printed a second line.

No evidence of an original memory.

My presentation slide still showed a smiling diagram of the human brain. Beneath it, in the university's approved font, stood the sentence I had spent eight years trying to earn.

A reliable boundary between recollection and fabrication.

I moved in front of the screen.

"Live demonstrations are always a risk."

The sponsor in the front row smiled politely. His assistant stopped taking notes.

Toby raised one hand.

Stop.

Not a question.

I disconnected the sensor.

In my mind, the birthday remained perfectly clear. A yellow bicycle. My mother's green cardigan. Rain changing the color of the garden wall.

I could remember the cake's uneven icing.

I could remember being disappointed by the bicycle bell.

I could not remember who had taken the photograph.

After the audience left, Toby locked the laboratory door.

"Which control did you use?"

"The original."

"There were two."

"There has only ever been one."

He turned his monitor toward me.

Two files.

Same name. Same creation date. Different voices.

In the first, I described the yellow bicycle.

In the second, a woman I did not recognize described a birthday I could feel arriving inside my own head.

Red shoes.

A hospital window.

A man telling me to stop calling him Dad.

I pressed my palms against the desk.

Toby reached for the speakers.

"Do you want me to stop?"

I nodded.

He stopped immediately.

For several seconds, the laboratory seemed full of ordinary sounds I had never noticed before.

A fan. A pipe. Someone laughing in the corridor.

Then Toby opened the consent folder.

My signature appeared on the first page.

I had signed it twenty years before the research began.
