The Witness I Invented Is Suing Me
An insurance investigator invents a witness to close a harmless claim. The witness arrives with a lawyer and proof that someone has died under her invented name.
ImagineYourBook writes a fresh draft from this idea.
How it begins
The witness I invented arrived eleven minutes before lunch, carrying a receipt.
I recognized the name before I recognized the danger.
Mara Bell. Forty-three. Ground-floor flat. Saw smoke at six seventeen.
I had made her forty-three because forty looked suspiciously round.
The woman at reception was older. She wore a raincoat with one missing button and held a supermarket bag against her knees. Beside her stood a man with a legal aid lanyard.
"Nina Vale?" he asked.
I put down my sandwich.
The woman placed her receipt on the desk. Three pounds for registered postage. Underneath it was a printout of my report, with her name neatly circled.
"I'd like to know," she said, "what I witnessed."
Behind me, our office printer woke and began producing the quarterly ethics statement.
I had invented Mara Bell to save a widow six weeks of waiting. There had been a fire, a ruined kitchen, a cheap kettle. Our system wanted an independent witness. The neighbors were away. The widow needed somewhere to sleep.
One sentence. One ordinary name.
I had not invented the signature.
I could see it now, on the copy the solicitor unfolded. A slanting M, a broken line through the B. Someone had signed beneath the words I had written.
"That isn't in my file," I said.
The solicitor watched me.
"Perhaps you should check."
My screen still showed the widow's claim. Paid. Closed. No further action.
I opened the attachments.
There was the signature.
There was also a photograph I had never uploaded. Mara Bell stood outside the burned building, looking directly at the camera. On the pavement beside her lay a man's shoe.
Only one shoe.
The woman pushed her supermarket bag forward.
Inside was the other.
"Before you ask," she said, "I didn't know him either."
The ethics statement slid from the printer and landed at my feet.

Develop this idea
Build this unreliable-witness thriller around evidence the reader can inspect: a claim form, a recorded call and a photograph with the wrong date. Nina should have a credible reason for cutting a corner, followed by an increasingly costly choice to admit it. Let the invented witness want something beyond revenge. For your own version, change the industry and the original shortcut, then rebuild the chain of proof. The strongest reveal changes the meaning of an early document rather than adding a secret stranger at the end.
