The Lost Property of Ordinary Miracles
A linked collection follows the clerk who catalogs everyday miracles nobody claims, including a missed accident, a healed argument, and a door held open for twenty years.
ImagineYourBook writes a fresh draft from this idea.
How it begins
The door arrived at nine.
It was still being held open.
Mina asked the delivery man to put it beside the umbrellas.
He declined.
"I've been carrying it since 2004."
"That should have been mentioned on the form."
Arthur Cole placed the door carefully against the counter, keeping one hand on the handle.
Beyond it, a railway platform waited in bright summer light.
Mina's office had no railway connection.
It barely had heating.
"What are you returning?"
"A small miracle."
She opened the register.
The previous day's entries included an argument that ended before anyone said the unforgivable thing, a bus that waited twelve seconds, and a fall that became a missed step instead.
The door was larger than usual.
"Who was it for?"
"My wife."
Mina stopped writing.
"Did she arrive?"
Arthur looked through the frame.
On the platform, a newspaper lifted in a breeze that had not happened for twenty years.
"No."
"And you've kept holding it?"
"I thought she might."
Mina had been trained not to promise recovery.
Lost miracles were not wishes. They were events that had slipped free of the lives they might have changed.
She examined the platform.
A woman stood at the far end.
Not waiting.
Trying to decide whether to approach.
"Does she know the door is open?"
Arthur looked up.
"I assumed."
Mina put down her pen.
The office was full of things people had assumed were too small to explain.
A saved seat.
An unsent invitation.
An apology remembered differently by the person who needed it.
She stepped beside Arthur.
"We could ask."
He loosened his hand on the handle.
For a moment the door grew lighter.
Outside the office, the real city continued toward work.
Inside it, Mina called down a summer platform.
The woman turned.
It was not the answer Arthur had expected.
Mina stayed beside him while he listened.
