How it begins

The goddess offered George a miracle.

He pointed at the fare notice.

"Two pounds eighty."

"I can restore your youth."

"I've only just qualified for the pension."

Elena looked at the coins in her hand.

They bore the faces of kings whose kingdoms had become archaeological disagreements.

George sighed.

"Sit down. We'll sort it out at the terminus."

She chose the seat behind him.

In three thousand years, she had received armies, sacrifices and one magnificent misunderstanding involving a volcano.

Nobody had offered to sort her out at a terminus.

The bus moved through rain.

At the first stop, an old woman asked whether it was still running on Friday.

"Last day," George said.

Elena leaned forward.

"What would you pray for?"

The woman looked at her.

"A bus on Monday."

At the next stop, a man carrying groceries gave the same answer.

By the village school, Elena had stopped asking about eternal blessings.

George watched her in the mirror.

"What are you collecting?"

"One sincere prayer from every stop."

"That sounds like a survey."

"My temple is being demolished."

"The depot too."

She looked toward the road.

Her temple stood on the hill above the final stop. For centuries, she had wondered why nobody climbed to ask for help.

Now she saw the distance from below.

George braked beside a broken shelter.

A woman with a walking stick waited in the rain.

Elena stood.

"I could fix the roof."

"Can you do it without lightning?"

"Probably."

"Then that would be useful."

At the terminus, he wrote the fare on a slip of paper.

She wrote a promise beside it.

No spectacle.

No required worship.

Just a roof that would keep the rain out.

George read it.

"For a goddess," he said, "you've had a promising morning."

Elena put the slip carefully into her pocket.
