The Sale Includes a Second Family
A probate cleaner prepares a vacant house for sale and finds a second family eating breakfast behind a sealed wall. They insist the house was sold to them first, and their children have grown older overnight.
ImagineYourBook writes a fresh draft from this idea.
How it begins
Someone was buttering toast behind the wall.
Mara heard the scrape clearly.
She stood in the empty dining room holding a box marked GLASS, MISCELLANEOUS.
The house had been vacant for eleven months.
The estate agent had said so twice, once while handing over the keys and once while asking whether she could finish before Friday.
Behind the wall, a child asked for jam.
A woman replied that there was marmalade.
Mara put down the box.
"Hello?"
Silence.
Then a chair moved.
The wallpaper had been hung over a narrow seam beside the fireplace. Mara pressed it gently. A rectangle gave beneath her palm.
Not plaster.
A door.
She stepped back and called the estate agent.
No answer.
Behind the seam, the woman spoke.
"We've already paid."
Mara looked at the inventory clipboard.
"What?"
"For the house."
"I clean houses."
"That's what the last one said."
The handle appeared slowly, as though the paper were remembering how to fit around it.
Mara did not touch it.
The door opened from the other side.
A kitchen stood beyond.
Sunlight crossed a table set for four. A woman in a green cardigan held a jar of marmalade. Two children sat beside a man reading a newspaper.
The date on the newspaper was tomorrow.
The woman looked at Mara's box.
"Please don't take the glasses again."
Mara glanced over her shoulder.
In the empty dining room, four pale circles marked the dusty table where she had packed the last set that morning.
"How long have you lived here?"
"Since Tuesday."
"What day is it now?"
The woman's expression changed.
Behind her, one child pushed back a chair.
He looked several years older than he had a moment before.
Mara kept both hands where the woman could see them.
"I think," she said, "we need to stop whoever is selling this house."

Outline and characters
Develop this idea
The children are supporting characters whose safety matters; keep the horror non-graphic. Define the house's temporal pattern through repeated domestic details rather than arbitrary aging. Clara should help determine the escape instead of waiting for Mara to solve her family. The temptation offered to Mara needs a personal cost that has been established, while the ending may leave the property's history unsettlingly incomplete.
