Your Future Has Been Rented Out
A careers adviser discovers her own future has been leased to a company that has never employed her. Every opportunity she declines is quietly removed from someone else's life.
ImagineYourBook writes a fresh draft from this idea.
How it begins
Elin declined the promotion at nine. At nine twelve, a stranger lost the right to become a teacher.
She learned this from the appeals queue.
The man sat outside her office holding a printout with a blank space where his vocational options should have been. Yesterday it had contained six routes. Today it contained five.
“I was told you could explain.”
Elin took the sheet. “Sometimes the forecast updates.”
“Between the interview and the offer?”
“It can.”
“Because of what?”
She opened his record. A small blue marker appeared beside the removed route.
ASSIGNMENT TRANSFERRED.
She had not seen that wording before.
The man introduced himself as Marek. He had spent two years qualifying. He had already bought a second-hand jacket for the classroom.
Elin searched the internal guidance.
No results.
Her own personnel notice remained open in another tab. The promotion she had declined offered more money, less client work, and a requirement to approve forecasts she did not trust.
Beneath it, a new attachment appeared.
FUTURE LEASE CONFIRMATION.
She read the first line twice.
Her projected working life, ages forty-one to sixty-seven, had been assigned to a company she had never heard of. The authorization date was the day she entered the profession.
She remembered signing the training agreement. Everyone had signed it. The adviser had said it secured their opportunities.
Marek watched her.
“Is something wrong?”
Elin closed the personnel tab, then opened it again. Concealing the screen would not make her better informed. It would merely make him the only frightened person in the room.
“I think so.”
She turned the monitor toward him.
Outside, the waiting-room display called the next applicant.
Both their phones vibrated.
An automated message thanked them for participating in the city's flexible future economy.
For the first time in eighteen years of advising people, Elin had no approved next step to offer.

Develop this idea
Explain the market through one concrete transaction before expanding to its social consequences. Decide whether futures are truly fixed or whether the system enforces its predictions through hiring, housing, and credit. Elin's earlier work should connect her to the harm without making her uniquely guilty. The resistance needs practical alternatives for people who relied on the exchange, not only a triumphant destruction of its records.
- Elin discovers a lease on her future.
- A declined promotion disappears from Marek's record.
- The exchange denies any link between cases.
- She finds bundled futures in pension funds.
- Marek recruits applicants with missing opportunities.
- Elin's own earlier advice enabled the market.
- A renewal deadline threatens permanent assignment.
- They expose the human consequences publicly.
- Workers refuse the exchange's forecasting assumptions.
- A new system preserves the right to change.
