Your Retirement Has Been Rescheduled Indefinitely
An adult maintenance worker reaches retirement age and finds the city has sold her remaining rest years. An appeal brings her together with people whose lives are being extended on paper solely to keep them employed.
ImagineYourBook writes a fresh draft from this idea.
How it begins
They gave Ada a retirement cake and a new shift pattern.
The cake had sixty-seven candles printed in icing.
The shift pattern began Monday.
Her manager placed both on the same table.
"There's been an adjustment."
Ada looked at the envelope.
"To the cake?"
A few colleagues laughed.
The manager did not.
"Your projected active years have increased."
"Congratulations to them."
"Which affects the available release date."
Ada opened the envelope.
Her retirement had moved forward by nine years.
At the bottom, a paragraph thanked her for participating in the city's future-capacity program.
She had not participated.
She had replaced water valves, repaired access rails, and spent forty-one winters explaining that a warning light could not be fixed by asking it to stop being negative.
Now someone had turned her remaining mornings into an asset.
She took the cake knife from the table.
The manager stepped back.
Ada cut a slice.
"I'm going to the pension office."
"They close at four."
"Then you'd better not put me on an afternoon call."
Outside, the city continued needing maintenance.
A bus ramp jammed at the stop. Ada waited while the driver reset it, resisting the old reflex to step forward and help before anyone asked.
At the pension counter, Nabil Saye read her notice.
He looked older than the last time she had seen him.
"Yours too?" he said.
Ada put down the cake box.
"How many?"
He opened a drawer.
Inside were notices arranged by year.
Not retirement year.
Year of sale.
Ada stared at the labels.
Nabil took off his glasses.
"They haven't made us live longer," he said. "They've made the accounts need us longer."
For a moment, neither spoke.
Then Ada opened the cake box.
"Have some," she said. "I'm not taking a retirement cake back to work."

Outline and characters
Develop this idea
Do not frame older workers as uniformly frail or uniformly eager to keep working. The harm is coerced labor disguised as a flattering forecast. Ada's maintenance knowledge can show what must be kept safe during resistance, avoiding a fantasy of reckless collapse. A credible resolution requires enforceable resources and time, and Ada should be free to enjoy rest without converting it into exemplary productivity.
- Ada's retirement ceremony becomes a contract extension
- The city has sold her projected rest years
- Nabil finds similar changes hidden in pension forecasts
- Workers are declared healthier on paper to justify longer service
- Ada documents the difference between actual maintenance needs and financial projections
- A buyer offers to release her years if she abandons the wider appeal
- She and other workers coordinate a safe refusal of nonessential overtime
- Nabil preserves the original actuarial assumptions
- A public audit exposes the sale and secures enforceable rest rights
- Ada begins retirement without promising to turn free time into another job

- Ada Ren, 67. Municipal maintenance worker
- Nabil Saye, 71. Pension records clerk
