The Woman Who Smuggled Silence

In an invented 1930s city where every public room must broadcast state radio, a piano tuner smuggles pockets of silence inside instruments.

How it begins

For twelve seconds, the piano said nothing.

Elise kept her hand on the tuning lever.

Nothing was unusual in the city.

Nothing was prohibited.

From six each morning until midnight, the public receivers filled shops, stations and dining rooms with music, announcements and the reassuring voice of the Civic Office. A room without a signal attracted questions. A person who preferred it attracted worse.

Yet here, inside the upright piano at the Hotel Orison, the broadcast had vanished.

She moved her hand.

The radio returned.

She touched the lowest string.

Silence.

Across the lounge, a waiter stopped pouring coffee.

They looked at each other.

Elise pressed a key. A low note covered the twelve seconds until the signal came back. The waiter resumed pouring with such concentration that coffee overflowed the cup.

An official in a grey coat lowered his newspaper.

"Something wrong with the instrument?"

"Humidity."

He rose.

Elise recognized the small silver badge on his lapel. Radio inspection.

The waiter left.

The official approached the piano and stood close enough for her to see that one hearing aid lay concealed behind his ear.

"Play it again," he said.

"Which note?"

"The one you didn't play."

She considered lying.

He removed the hearing aid.

For a moment the compulsory music seemed louder than everything else in the room.

Elise touched the string.

The receiver fell silent.

The man's eyes closed.

She had expected suspicion. Pleasure frightened her more.

When the twelve seconds ended, he replaced the hearing aid and took a notebook from his pocket.

"Your name?"

"Elise Dorn."

He wrote something, tore out the page and placed it on the keyboard.

It was not a summons.

It was an address and a time.

Underneath, in careful letters, he had written:

I HAVE SOMETHING THAT NEEDS TO BE HEARD.

Then he put a coin beside the page.

"For the tuning," he said.

The radio announced that the city had never been more united.
