The Night Shift Wears Your Ring
A hospital security consultant finds a wedding ring used as a signal in a protection scheme. Its adult owner is the night porter investigating the same disappearance, and neither can afford a rescue arranged without consent.
ImagineYourBook writes a fresh draft from this idea.
How it begins
The ring lay beneath the emergency telephone, placed where nobody could mistake it for something lost.
Irene photographed it without touching.
Gold, worn thin at the back. A small dent beside the setting. She had seen it in a security image from the night a porter disappeared.
At the corridor's end, a trolley wheel squeaked.
Malik Dorr stopped when he saw her.
“That's mine.”
“Then you can tell me why it is here.”
He looked at the telephone.
The hospital after visiting hours became a place built from quieter work. Cleaning machines, late meals, doors opened for people who could not manage them alone. Irene had spent the week reviewing a security system designed around public entrances and almost entirely uninterested in how the night staff moved.
Malik knew every corridor.
He had not appeared on the list of people interviewed.
“Who told you to look?” he asked.
“Wrong question.”
For a moment she thought he would walk away.
Instead he parked the trolley where it left the route clear and took a small notebook from his pocket.
The ring appeared in a photograph on the first page, worn by an older man outside a workshop.
“My grandfather's,” Malik said.
“Why use it as a signal?”
“Because someone I trust would know I hadn't sent a message from another person's phone.”
Irene looked at the ring again.
“Where is your colleague?”
“I don't know.”
“Does somebody else?”
His silence answered.
She put her own notebook beside his.
“If we work together, you don't decide what I can safely hear.”
Malik met her eyes. The tiredness in his face made him look less guarded, not less formidable.
“All right.”
Beyond them, a lift opened. They both turned.
A nurse came out carrying an empty cup and asked whether either had seen the missing porter.
For the first time, Irene noticed how many people were still asking a question management had already begun treating as answered.
