The Ice Rink Booked Our Breakup
Two adult former skating partners are hired to coach a wedding proposal on ice. Repeating the routine that ended their partnership forces them to build trust without pretending the old injury never mattered.
ImagineYourBook writes a fresh draft from this idea.
How it begins
Elena had changed her hair, her coat and the way she held her shoulders. She still stepped onto the ice as though the floor had finally decided to behave.
Mia watched from beside the rink gate. The young couple booking the proposal rehearsal waved Elena over, delighted that their surprise choreographer had arrived. Nobody had thought to mention her name to the coach who would be teaching the routine.
“We found your old video,” the bride-to-be said. “The lift at the end is incredible.”
Mia looked at Elena's left knee. Elena looked at the rail where Mia's hand had tightened.
“No lift,” Elena said.
The firmness of it surprised Mia more than the arrival. Seven years ago, they had made difficult things look effortless until one of them could no longer distinguish discipline from refusal. The breakup had followed the injury. Everyone remembered the injury.
The silence afterward belonged only to them.
Elena skated to the music desk. She had brought a different arrangement, slower at the beginning, with room for two people who had never performed together. She explained the changes to the clients without offering Mia as evidence of what happened when a routine went wrong.
Mia felt a small, unwelcome gratitude.
During the first run, the groom lost his balance. Both women moved automatically, but Elena stopped when Mia reached him first. She waited. She did not take over.
They reset the music.
“You've taught this before,” Elena said quietly.
“People falling?”
“People trusting somebody enough to look foolish.”
Mia checked the client's skates. Across the ice, Elena helped the other woman stand without pulling her.
For years Mia had remembered their partnership as the place where everything became too difficult. She had forgotten the afternoons when they laughed over a failed first step.
The music began again.
“Show them with me?” Elena asked.
Mia considered the distance between them.
“Without the ending.”
Elena held out her hand.
“We can choose another.”
