The Compass Points at My Ex

An expedition leader's compass begins pointing toward the partner who abandoned her last voyage. Reaching a lost crew requires crossing a landscape that keeps the two adults' versions of the journey apart.

How it begins

Sera's compass pointed at Adrian Vale, which was inconvenient because she had crossed three countries to avoid him.

He stood outside the mountain rescue office, holding a map beneath one arm.

“You came,” he said.

“The instrument malfunctioned.”

“Still blaming equipment?”

She looked down.

The needle turned as he moved.

North lay behind her. Adrian did not.

Inside the office, a rescue beacon flashed on the wall display. Four people missing above the old pass. A storm due before evening. Sera recognized the signal code: her former expedition's private sequence.

Adrian opened the map.

“They used our route.”

“Our route doesn't exist anymore.”

“It does for them.”

The mountains had a reputation for preserving paths travelers remembered strongly enough. Sera had dismissed the reports as a poetic explanation for bad surveying. Then her compass had begun pointing west at a man she had last seen walking away.

“Who gave them the log?”

He looked at her.

“You published it.”

“An edited version.”

“Yes.”

The word landed harder than it should have.

Sera took off her wet gloves. In the published account, the failed crossing had become a weather incident. Adrian's departure had become a personal matter. She had separated the two so neatly that she had almost believed they were unrelated.

The beacon pulsed again.

A voice came through the speaker, broken by static.

We can see the bridge. The bridge isn't here.

Sera closed her eyes.

She remembered giving an order at that bridge. She had left the order out of the log.

Adrian put a coil of rope on the table.

“We can argue on the way.”

“Will the route let us travel together?”

“I don't know.”

Outside, the first snow began falling against the window.

Sera checked her compass. It still pointed toward him.

For once, she did not turn the instrument until it showed the direction she preferred.

Outline and characters

Develop this idea

The rescue must matter independently of the romantic reunion. Give both adults defensible accounts that contain omissions, rather than making one secretly right about everything. Define the compass's limitation so it cannot solve every separation. Let practical cooperation rebuild trust before emotional declarations. A hopeful ending can involve a first new date or a shared plan, without erasing why the earlier relationship failed.

  1. Sera's compass points toward her former partner.
  2. A lost crew's beacon uses their old route.
  3. Adrian disputes her account of his departure.
  4. The mountains separate travelers by remembered paths.
  5. They recover the original expedition log.
  6. Sera admits a command she omitted.
  7. Adrian acknowledges the cost of leaving silently.
  8. They navigate by shared present observations.
  9. The missing crew returns through a jointly chosen pass.
  10. A new relationship begins without rewriting the past.
