We Buried the Wrong Secret
A landscape architect and a former criminal courier uncover a hidden safe while restoring a memorial garden. Their old betrayal conceals a different victim, and reconciliation depends on giving her the truth first.
ImagineYourBook writes a fresh draft from this idea.
How it begins
Mina expected roots beneath the old rose bed. She found a safe and the man she had spent eight years blaming for it.
Not literally beneath the roses. Omar stood at the garden gate, holding the restoration notice she had posted that morning.
“I came to warn you.”
“You're late.”
He looked at the metal corner exposed in the soil.
The garden belonged to a foundation that wanted a tasteful dedication, improved drainage and no surprises before the mayor arrived. Mina had promised the first two. The third was not an architectural service.
Omar stopped outside the gate.
He had once entered every room in her life as if somebody had already given permission. She noticed that he did not do it now.
“May I?”
“Why?”
“I know the mark on the lid.”
She brushed soil from a small blue symbol. A courier's sign, ordinary enough to be overlooked unless a person had spent too long learning what packages could contain.
Omar's face altered.
Mina remembered that expression from their last evening together. She had thought it meant he was deciding how to lie. Perhaps it had. She no longer trusted the gentler alternatives memory offered.
“Whose is it?” she asked.
“The safe?”
“The secret.”
He looked toward the house behind the garden.
For years, Mina had called what happened their betrayal, as if two people being hurt proved the story belonged to them. The thought suddenly embarrassed her.
Omar took a folded photograph from his coat.
An adult woman stood beside a delivery van. Her expression was ordinary, impatient with being photographed. Nothing about her suggested she had agreed to become the missing part of somebody else's explanation.
“Her name is Rafiqa,” he said.
Mina put down the brush.
“Alive?”
“Yes.”
“Then we begin by asking her.”
Omar nodded.
Behind them, the roses moved in the wind. For once, the thing Mina wanted to restore was not the relationship she had buried beside them.

The recovered object should have a clear history and people harmed by its concealment. Mina's architectural skill can establish what was moved and when, while Omar contributes information he must be willing to verify. Do not let a private romantic reconciliation replace restitution. Their second chance becomes convincing when they first give the overlooked victim a meaningful choice about the evidence.
