The Country of Unapproved Names
A naming officer gives a newborn an illegal name as a clerical favor. By morning, everyone with that name has become invisible to the state.
ImagineYourBook writes a fresh draft from this idea.
How it begins
The forbidden name fitted the baby perfectly.
That was Nora's first mistake.
Her second was typing it.
The approved list contained twelve thousand options, none of which made the woman across the desk smile.
"This was my grandmother's," the woman said.
Nora checked the spelling.
Six letters.
Nothing obviously dangerous.
"It's not on the list."
"I know."
"There is an appeal."
"The appeal takes nine months."
The baby slept through this discussion of the person she would be permitted to become.
Nora looked at the queue.
Then at the woman.
Then at the empty field where the system expected a manageable answer.
She typed the name.
The screen went white.
For three seconds, the office became unusually quiet.
When the record returned, the mother's details had vanished.
Nora looked up.
The woman was still sitting there.
"Your identification, please."
"I gave it to you."
Nora held the card against the scanner.
No person found.
She tried again.
Behind her, a printer released the baby's certificate.
The approved-name field was blank.
The mother stood.
"What did you do?"
Nora opened the exception log.
Every entry was disappearing as she watched.
Not just the baby.
A baker.
A bus driver.
An old woman whose pension appointment was scheduled for tomorrow.
All carrying the same six-letter name.
The woman across the desk lifted her sleeping child.
"Eva Marsh," she said.
Nora looked at the empty record.
"That's your name?"
"It was when I walked in."
A guard approached.
"Is there a problem?"
Nora kept her hand over the scanner.
"System fault."
The guard looked at the chair.
"Who are you talking to?"
Eva stood directly in front of him.
The baby opened her eyes.
Nora took a blank paper form from the drawer.
For the first time in eleven years, she wrote a name without asking the machine whether it existed.
