How it begins

Eva sold their first kiss for twelve pounds.

In her defense, it had been mislabeled.

The bottle said courage.

The man who returned it said otherwise.

He stood in the shop doorway holding the tiny amber vial between finger and thumb.

"I'd like a refund."

"Did it not work?"

"It worked very specifically."

Eva took the bottle.

She recognized the warmth before she recognized the face.

A railway platform.

Cold air.

The startling certainty of choosing someone without knowing what happened next.

She put the vial down.

The man watched her.

"You've seen it."

"Possibly."

"I'm Thomas."

"Eva."

"I know."

She did not like how gently he said that.

The shop dealt in memories freely given.

A difficult goodbye.

A successful audition.

The small courage required to ask a useful question.

Eva did not sell futures.

She had rejected that application three times.

Thomas placed his receipt beside the bottle.

The date was next Thursday.

Today was Monday.

Outside, a woman paused to examine the window display and continued walking.

Ordinary time remained rudely unaffected.

"Have we met before?" Eva asked.

"I hoped you could tell me."

She opened the stock book.

Between yesterday's courage and tomorrow's confidence, someone had entered the vial in handwriting she knew.

Hers.

Beneath it stood a warning.

Do not mistake remembering for agreeing.

Eva read the sentence aloud.

Thomas stepped back from the counter.

The movement mattered more than anything he had said.

"We don't have to become them," he said.

She looked at the little bottle.

For a moment, the platform brightened inside it.

Two people waiting.

Not destined.

Not trapped.

Just waiting.

Eva fetched a blank label.

"What would you like the refund in?"

Thomas considered.

"Perhaps," he said, "we could start with a conversation."

She left the bottle uncorked.

The shop smelled briefly of rain on railway stone.
