The Weather Inside Other People's Coats

A coat-check attendant and an adult dancer exchange poems about the strangers whose coats seem to carry whole seasons. The final collection asks who gets to keep the warmth.

ImagineYourBook writes a fresh draft from this idea.

How it begins

His coat arrives full of rain.

Outside, the pavement is dry.

I hang it between a wool jacket and a woman's evening cape.

By interval, the hem has made a small puddle.

Nobody is surprised.

This is a dance hall. People leave unlikely weather at the door.

Ada gives me her ticket and asks whether winter has come back.

I point to the coat.

She touches the sleeve.

"He wore that on opening night."

"Whose?"

She does not answer until the music begins again.

Then she says, "Mine."

She used to dance in the center of the photograph above the stairs.

Now she stands at its edge when visitors ask where she is.

I know the feeling.

My job is to remember what belongs to other people without becoming part of the claim.

At ten, a boy collects a jacket too large for him.

He has rehearsed the sentence his father told him to say.

I give him the jacket and the gloves inside its pocket.

He leaves wearing a small private summer.

At eleven, Ada brings her old costume in a paper bag.

"Could someone use this?"

I want to tell her it belongs in a museum.

She looks tired of being preserved.

"Yes," I say.

The bag becomes lighter between us.

At midnight, the rainy coat is still here.

I open the claim book.

Under its number, someone has written: Keep the warmth. Let the weather go.

I hang a dry towel beneath it.

Ada sits beside my desk.

For the first time all evening, we talk about something that has not already happened.

Outside, a breeze moves through the open door.

Neither of us asks what season it thinks it is.

I leave the last peg empty, not because someone is missing, but because a room can make a place for whoever comes next.
