The War Game Is a Wedding

A military strategist discovers the alien invasion simulations are rehearsals for an interstellar wedding. A diplomatic caterer helps her reinterpret every apparent threat as etiquette, but one human commander is determined to win a battle that nobody else believes they are fighting.

How it begins

The invasion fleet requested permission to bring an additional aunt.

Vera Chu read the translation twice. Orbital Command's threat model raised the alert level.

At forty-three, Vera designed simulations for the kinds of emergencies people hoped never to experience. She knew an unreliable category when it started awarding medals to itself.

'Why an aunt?' she asked.

The intelligence officer pointed to the screen.

'An unknown weapons platform. Possibly abbreviated.'

Mika Bell, thirty-seven, diplomatic caterer, had been called to assess a suspected biological delivery disguised as a menu. He set down the document.

'It means aunt.'

'You are certain?'

'Only that every family dispute in that language begins with the same suffix.'

Vera opened the previous transmissions. Coordinated approach vectors. Reciprocal deployment of ceremonial vessels. A requirement that two houses become one beneath a shared ring.

Her simulation had classified the ring as a siege structure.

Mika examined the seating diagram.

'You have placed the former spouses beside the musicians.'

'That is the hostile battery.'

'Not if you move them.'

On the main display, a pale-green circle turned around a small central platform. Vera enlarged it. The alleged landing target held a banquet table.

She felt a week of confident briefings rearrange themselves into something professionally fatal.

'It is a wedding.'

Mika nodded.

'A large one. The aunt is a genuine complication.'

Before Vera could call a review, the commander entered. He had approved the invasion exercise, announced its readiness figures, and invited a delegation to watch humanity win.

'The simulation begins in twenty minutes,' he said.

'It needs to stop.'

'On what grounds?'

Vera turned the diagram toward him.

'We are about to destroy the cake.'

The commander studied the table, the ring, and the additional ceremonial vessels approaching the station.

'Then the cake,' he said, 'may be a decoy.'

Mika quietly moved the musicians on the seating plan. Somewhere beyond the observation glass, an alien orchestra changed its key and began the entrance procession.

Outline and characters

Develop this idea

The comedy should expose rigid threat categories without making every military worker foolish or every alien custom inherently ridiculous. Vera has technical authority, while Mika recognizes social information the model excludes. Give the marrying adults agency over their own ceremony. Keep real danger in the proposed human response rather than retroactively validating the invasion theory. The aunt can be troublesome without becoming a caricature of an entire culture or family structure.

  1. Vera questions a translated threat that Mika recognizes as a family request.
  2. They reinterpret the simulation's targets as wedding arrangements and ceremonial routes.
  3. The commander refuses to abandon an exercise that underpins his public claims of readiness.
  4. Mika discovers that human responses have already been accepted as offers to host part of the ceremony.
  5. The marrying parties disagree about the event, preventing the aliens from becoming a single convenient cultural bloc.
  6. Vera documents the translation failures and asks for an independent halt to the live demonstration.
  7. An etiquette mistake creates a real diplomatic crisis without making the guests an invasion force.
  8. Mika negotiates a revised ceremony that both families and human representatives explicitly accept.
  9. Vera redirects the demonstration into a transparent review before the commander's staged attack can proceed.
  10. The wedding takes place with fewer weapons and one extra aunt, while the station rewrites how it decides something is a threat.
