The Treaty of Small Mercies
A treaty weaver must marry the envoy who outlawed her craft to make a peace neither kingdom can break.
ImagineYourBook writes a fresh draft from this idea.
How it begins
Mara found the lie in the hem.
It was a small lie, only six blue threads among the gray, and someone had tried to hide it beneath a maker's knot. She picked the knot apart with a needle and laid the threads on her worktable.
Across from her, the envoy waited with both hands flat on his knees.
"Well?" he asked.
"Your king promised the bridge would stay open."
"It is open."
"To people carrying less than one loaf of bread."
He closed his eyes. That pleased her less than she had expected. She preferred officials who argued. It was easier to charge them double.
Outside the workshop, a cart waited in the rain. Mara could hear its driver comforting a horse in the low, repetitive voice people used when they had run out of useful assurances. The cart had been there since dawn. Its flour would not cross the bridge today.
"Can you mend it?" the envoy asked.
"A treaty isn't a coat. I can't make a larger promise out of the same material."
"Then use different material."
Mara set down the needle. "What is your name?"
"Elias Holt."
She knew the name. It appeared at the bottom of the notice that had closed her father's workshop. She had kept that notice for nine years, not because she needed reminding but because paper was expensive and she disliked wasting things that still had a blank side.
"You signed the licensing order."
"Yes."
"Do you expect an apology to buy you a repair?"
"No. I haven't offered you one."
That was true. She disliked him a little differently.
He reached into his coat and brought out a folded document. No seal, no ribbon. Just six pages covered in cramped handwriting.
"I've spent three years trying to reverse it. Every petition requires approval from the office that benefits from refusing it. This is the last route I could find."
Mara read the first paragraph. Then the second.
"This is a marriage statute."
"Yes."
The horse outside stamped once. Somewhere behind Mara, the six blue threads began to burn.
