The Planet We Rescued Is Following Us Home

A salvage crew frees a sentient planet from an abandoned control network. Its delighted attempt to follow them turns rescue into a negotiation about what freedom requires when one grateful guest can alter an entire system.

How it begins

Arun Adler noticed the planet following them just after lunch.

The ship's lunch tray remained on the console. Someone had drawn a smiling planet in a patch of spilled sauce.

At first, he assumed the navigation display had frozen. Then the planet moved around a moon to keep them in view.

"Captain?"

Sofia Bell was trying to remove a salvage authorization sticker from her sleeve. It had bonded more successfully than the control network they'd just dismantled.

"Tell me something inexpensive."

"The planet is coming with us."

She looked at the display.

Behind their ship, a blue-green world eased out of its assigned orbit with the careful enthusiasm of a large dog leaving a gate open.

"We told it it was free," Arun said.

"I remember. I was present for the speech."

The communications panel chimed.

A voice filled the bridge, assembled from weather reports, old shipping calls, and something that sounded like wind moving through very deep trees.

I HAVE PACKED.

Sofia stared.

"Packed what?"

MYSELF.

The ship's mugs shifted as a new gravitational warning sounded. Arun steadied one without looking away from the screen.

They had spent nine days cutting a dead corporation's machinery away from the planet's living crust. Its first independent act had been to make a continent-wide sunrise. The crew had applauded. Sofia was beginning to suspect they'd been less clear about what came next.

"We need to explain home," she said.

Arun brought up the inhabited system ahead. Three small worlds. A crowded transfer station. People with entirely reasonable expectations about where planets would remain.

"Whose home?"

The question stayed between them.

On the display, the rescued world turned slightly, bringing a range of snow-covered mountains into the light as though showing them something it hoped they'd like.

Sofia opened the channel again.

"We're glad you're free," she said carefully. "Now we need to talk about distance."

Outline and characters

Develop this idea

Treat the moving sentient planet as an explicit space-opera premise, with consistent fictional limits rather than claims about real orbital engineering. Its gratitude should not erase the needs of its inhabitants or neighboring systems. Give those communities a voice. Sofia's responsibility is neither to own the rescued world nor abandon foreseeable consequences. Humor can emerge from a planetary-scale social misunderstanding while the negotiated solution remains emotionally and practically serious.

  1. Sofia frees a planet from an abandoned control net
  2. Arun detects it moving behind their ship
  3. Gratitude becomes a threat to nearby orbits
  4. The crew learns to communicate boundaries
  5. The planet reveals why stillness terrifies it
  6. A salvage authority demands renewed control
  7. Sofia rejects both ownership and unrestricted harm
  8. Residents and neighboring systems help negotiate a route
  9. The planet chooses a sustainable independent course
  10. The crew visits without promising to become its home
Characters
  • Sofia Bell, 50. Salvage captain
  • Arun Adler, 33. Ship navigator
Series possibilities
  • A salvage crew's unusual rescues become adventures in responsibility after the dramatic escape is over.
