The Ghost in the Other Half of the Bed
A sleep researcher shares an inherited flat with a ghost who appears only when she is awake. Falling in love means finding out whose dream is keeping him there.
ImagineYourBook writes a fresh draft from this idea.
How it begins
The ghost occupied the side of the bed Nora had been planning to use for books.
This was a disappointing first impression.
"Do you mind?"
He looked down at the pillow.
"I was here first."
"That's the argument the damp makes."
Nora placed her suitcase beside the wardrobe.
She had inherited the flat from an aunt whose most supernatural quality had been the ability to remember every small loan.
The solicitor had mentioned a roof assessment.
He had not mentioned a man in a pale blue shirt who appeared to be reading yesterday's newspaper through his own hand.
"Are you always here?"
"Only when you're awake."
"How do you know?"
He considered this.
"I don't."
Nora sat on the other side of the bed.
She was a sleep researcher. Her professional life depended on treating strange experiences carefully before giving them an attractive explanation.
She checked the room.
No projector.
No reflection.
No obvious reason for her pulse to be doing anything unusual.
"What is your name?"
"Elias."
"Do you remember dying?"
His face changed.
Not fear.
The effort of someone looking for a door in a room they thought they knew.
"No."
Nora opened her notebook.
For several weeks, she had been hoping for work that did not require another committee meeting.
She had not imagined this alternative.
The bedside clock clicked.
Elias glanced toward it.
"Please don't stay awake for me."
She looked up.
"Why would you say that?"
"People do. At first."
A folder lay beneath the clock.
On its cover was the name of the sleep clinic where Nora had trained.
Inside, a photograph showed the same room.
The same bed.
Someone sleeping on the side where Elias sat.
He looked at the image.
For the first time, he seemed less like a ghost than a person waiting to learn which story had been told about him.
Nora closed the notebook.
"We start with breakfast," she said.
