The Embassy Inside a Sleeping Star

A diplomatic acoustician enters an embassy built inside a sleeping star. Every loud promise shortens its remaining life, and the two delegations have brought speeches written to be impossible to keep.

How it begins

The applause cost the star eleven years.

Leora watched the number change on her wrist display while the delegation practiced standing. Thirty pairs of gloves came together beneath the crystal ceiling. Beyond it, the sleeping star folded a slow red limb around the embassy.

“Again?” asked the protocol officer.

“No.”

“The arrival sequence includes three rounds.”

“The arrival sequence now includes none.”

He consulted his tablet. “There are sensitivities.”

Leora pointed upward.

The star had been asleep for four million years. Its remaining life, before the applause, had been estimated at nineteen thousand. She had been hired to improve the acoustics for an agreement intended to last forever.

An elderly man in maintenance gray appeared beside the dais. He placed a felt cover over the ceremonial bell without asking.

“Sami Venn,” he whispered. “Caretaker.”

“Is this a known fault?”

“It is a known feature.”

“Who knows?”

“People who clean up after the speeches.”

Leora opened the embassy's resonance model. The applause should have dispersed through the dampers. Instead, a narrow band had passed through the shield and into the stellar interior. Each repeated wave had returned stronger.

From the reception corridor came a recorded voice testing the phrase Our commitment is eternal.

The red limb outside the ceiling tightened.

Leora disconnected the speaker.

On her display, another six years vanished.

Sami handed her a stack of paper. Not tablets. Paper, annotated in different inks by people whose handwriting grew less steady toward the bottom of the pages.

“The last acoustician?” she asked.

“And the ones before her.”

The first sheet contained a single instruction.

Ask what they intend to promise before you let them speak.

In the corridor, the first ambassador began rehearsing his welcome.

Leora stood in the doorway and raised one finger to her lips. For once, a room full of diplomats understood her immediately.

Outline and characters

Develop this idea

Make sound inside the embassy a designed transmission system rather than ordinary sound traveling through vacuum. Establish why promises affect the star and which kinds of speech do not. The negotiations need an immediate human issue beyond protecting a spectacular setting. Leora's technical skill should reveal choices; it should not let her dictate a morally perfect agreement to everyone else.

  1. An applause test ages the star.
  2. Leora bans amplified diplomatic speeches.
  3. Delegations submit incompatible written promises.
  4. Sami reveals earlier talks shortened stellar life.
  5. A translator discovers meanings create resonance.
  6. The embassy loses its cooling shield.
  7. Leora invites unnamed communities to speak.
  8. Delegates replace grand pledges with verifiable acts.
  9. A quiet evacuation preserves the star.
  10. The treaty moves to accountable public ground.
