How it begins

Mara found a castle in the kitchen and a man asleep beneath the only waterproof section of roof.

The castle was made of sand. It occupied the sink, the draining board and the expensive space where a cooker ought to have been.

She put down her toolbox.

“This is my week.”

The man opened one eye. “It was.”

“What happened?”

He pointed upward.

Rain came through the ceiling in three separate architectural styles.

Mara had inherited alternating use of the beach house from her former landlady, a woman who had believed sensible people needed interruptions. Apparently Felix Cole was hers.

She knew his work from the local papers: immense sand palaces, impossible arches, one remarkably convincing octopus. She had not expected the artist to use the kitchen as a practice beach.

“Where's the calendar?”

“Floated away.”

“The one in the hall?”

“With the hall.”

Mara went to look.

Beyond the kitchen door, the front step had become an island. The sea had withdrawn, leaving a ribbon of weed across the wall and a small fish in the umbrella stand.

Felix appeared beside her carrying a mug.

“Tea?”

“Is there electricity?”

“No.”

“Then how?”

“Optimism. I'm checking how far it goes.”

She almost smiled. This annoyed her more than the castle.

On the remaining hook hung two brass keys and a note from the woman who had left them the house.

Don't let either of you turn it into a monument.

Mara read it twice.

Felix looked over her shoulder. “She knew you.”

“She knew you too.”

He studied the ruined hall.

“I can build something beautiful.”

“Can you build something that stays up in rain?”

“Not historically.”

Mara opened her toolbox. Felix moved the sleeping bag and knelt beside her.

Outside, the tide began returning.

They had forty minutes before it reached the step again, and neither had asked where the other intended to sleep tonight.

Outline and characters

Develop this idea

Make the inheritance clear: two unrelated adults receive the house from a mutual friend, with practical obligations neither expected. Their skills should contribute differently to its repair. Avoid making the dreamer useless or the planner incapable of feeling. A romantic resolution needs an honest financial plan as well as attraction, so the house becomes a choice rather than a trap.

  1. Mara arrives during Felix's allotted week.
  2. A storm destroys their shared calendar.
  3. Repairs require both unrelated beneficiaries.
  4. A sale offer promises easy escape.
  5. Felix conceals a failing career.
  6. Mara treats every improvement as temporary.
  7. A competition takes their last savings.
  8. They disagree about whose dream matters.
  9. Both choose a workable shared plan.
  10. The house becomes somewhere freely chosen.
