The Abbey Where Nobody Casts a Shadow

A lighting historian investigates a restored abbey whose residents have no shadows after sunset. The missing shapes are gathering beneath the chapel floor, each carrying a task its owner promised to forget.

How it begins

At sunset, the residents stopped casting shadows.

Clara watched from the west cloister.

The lamps came on in sequence, warm pools of light along the stone walkway. Shoes, coats, and faces remained perfectly ordinary.

The ground beneath them was empty.

Her own shadow stretched toward the wall.

No one else's did.

Ruth stood beside her with the abbey's restoration file.

"I thought you should see it before reading the reports."

"How long?"

"Since the reopening."

"Every evening?"

"Every evening."

A resident crossed the courtyard carrying laundry.

His basket cast a shadow.

His hands did not.

Clara followed him with her eyes until he entered the dormitory.

"What do they think is happening?"

Ruth closed the file.

"Some find it restful."

Below them came a scrape.

A slow movement of stone against stone.

Clara looked toward the chapel steps.

The sound repeated.

"Animals?"

"No."

Ruth said it without hesitation.

Inside the chapel, a narrow line of darkness moved between two floor slabs.

Not a crack.

Something passing beneath one.

Clara knelt at a distance.

The shape had fingers.

It spread flat against the stone as though trying to lift it.

From elsewhere under the floor came a second movement, then a third.

Ruth remained by the door.

"They don't all want the same thing."

"What do they want?"

The hand beneath the slab began making a small repeated gesture.

Fold. Smooth. Fold again.

Clara recognized it.

Her mother had folded hospital letters that way when she wanted them put somewhere safe.

Clara had a box of those letters in her study.

Unopened.

She stood too quickly.

Her own shadow remained on the floor for half a second after she moved.

Then it followed.

Ruth opened the restoration file to a page marked RELEASE FROM BURDEN.

Clara looked from the words to the hand beneath the stone.

"Who wrote that promise?" she asked.

Outline and characters

Develop this idea

Make the shadow tasks specific and varied, including obligations that cannot simply be completed. The story should question institutional promises of easy absolution without suggesting guilt is always useful or deserved. Clara's lighting expertise can test the phenomenon before the supernatural explanation develops. Give the residents different reasons for staying, and let the ending include accountability rather than a single cleansing ceremony.

  1. Clara studies an abbey whose residents lose their shadows after sunset
  2. The missing forms gather beneath the chapel floor
  3. Each shadow repeats an obligation its owner abandoned
  4. Ruth explains that the restoration used an old absolution ritual
  5. The community divides over whether relief from guilt justified the exchange
  6. Clara's own shadow begins performing a task she has avoided
  7. A proposed ceremony would bind the shadows permanently
  8. Residents confront their actual obligations without promising impossible restitution
  9. They open the floor and end the ritual collectively
  10. Some shadows return changed while the abbey loses its claim to offer absolution
