How it begins

My replacement knew where the good mugs were.

She handed me one before introducing herself.

"Marta," she said. "I was told you'd prefer tea."

"I'm Rhea. I started today."

"I know."

We stood in the factory kitchen while a machine beyond the wall stamped plastic into shapes too quickly to follow. My temporary badge still had its protective film. Hers was scratched around the photograph.

"Are you training me?" I asked.

"Not exactly."

A man in a charcoal suit appeared in the doorway.

"There you both are. Excellent. We like continuity."

He shook my hand without giving his name.

Marta put down her mug.

"Rhea was asking about the overlap."

"Nothing to worry about." He smiled at me. "We plan ahead."

He left before I could ask what he was planning.

Marta waited until his footsteps disappeared.

Then she opened a folder on the counter.

Inside was a checklist headed DEPARTING INSPECTOR.

My name occupied the first box.

Below it, someone had ticked RETURN OF ACCESS CARD, COMPLETION OF HANDOVER, and CONFIRMATION OF NO OUTSTANDING CONCERNS.

The date was yesterday.

"I haven't seen this," I said.

"I thought not."

I looked at the final line.

EMPLOYEE SIGNATURE.

The signature was a reasonable imitation of mine. The long loop of the R was wrong, but whoever had written it knew I never joined the final two letters.

"Who gave you this?"

"It was in my induction pack."

"When?"

"Yesterday."

The stamping machine stopped.

In the sudden quiet, I heard someone lock the kitchen's outer door.

Marta closed the folder and slid it beneath a newspaper.

"Drink your tea," she said.

"Why?"

"Because the last inspector refused it, and they still mention that when they explain why she left."

My own induction timetable promised a welcome meeting after lunch. Apparently someone had already completed the goodbye.

I set the mug down without taking a sip.

Outline and characters

Develop this idea

Make the workplace's ordinary procedures carry the threat: induction forms, sample logs, access badges, and performance reviews. Rhea and Marta should become allies through earned disclosures rather than instant trust. Keep the technical failure understandable and avoid implying that one heroic employee can replace a full regulatory investigation. The climax should secure credible evidence and stop a specific immediate harm.

  1. Rhea arrives to find her replacement already training
  2. Marta shows her a departure checklist dated before Rhea's appointment
  3. They compare contradictory induction materials
  4. A previous inspector's unfinished report reveals altered test results
  5. Management encourages the women to compete for one permanent role
  6. They establish an independent chain of sample evidence
  7. Rhea discovers that inspectors are rotated before failures can be signed off
  8. Marta admits she once accepted a quiet settlement
  9. They submit corroborated findings together before another shipment leaves
  10. The factory faces scrutiny and both women reclaim their professional accounts
