The Woman in the Wallpaper Is Packing

A wallpaper conservator notices a painted woman gradually filling a suitcase between visits. The pattern records a departure the house has spent a century preventing, and the restorer's repairs are making escape harder.

How it begins

On Monday, the woman in the wallpaper owned an empty suitcase.

On Thursday, she had packed a blue dress.

Clara checked the photograph from her first visit.

Empty.

She checked the wall.

Dress.

The painted woman stood beneath a flowering branch, one hand on the lid. Around her, the pattern repeated birds, leaves, and a little white house.

Only one repeat contained a suitcase.

Clara marked the location on her plan without touching it.

Downstairs, Ruth was making tea.

"Was the pattern ever altered?"

"Everything in this house was altered."

"I mean the paper."

Ruth brought two cups to the doorway.

"Does she have the dress yet?"

Clara did not answer.

The older woman looked past her toward the wall.

"I hoped she'd get further this time."

Outside, traffic moved through the rain. The townhouse's owner had asked for a faithful restoration before sale. No visible changes. No modern additions. The past made presentable.

Clara had already repaired the torn corner beside the painted house.

Now she looked at it more closely.

The tear had followed the outline of a door.

Her new backing paper sealed it shut.

"What happens if I continue?"

Ruth put down the tea.

"The same thing that happened before."

"Which was?"

"She unpacked."

Clara opened the condition report.

Under previous interventions, someone had written MINOR LOSSES MADE GOOD.

The phrase appeared three times across a century of records.

On the wall, the woman's hand had moved.

She now held a small red scarf.

Clara touched her own coat pocket.

Her scarf was gone.

For several seconds she stood still, aware of the tools laid neatly on the table and how useful each one could be to a house determined to keep its pattern intact.

The painted woman paused with one hand on the suitcase. Clara set the conservation brush down.

Then she crossed out the word minor.

Outline and characters

Develop this idea

Keep this distinct from familiar trapped-woman Gothic plots by centering the ethics of conservation and a departure planned with agency. Clara should question what an exact repair preserves, not diagnose the figure as an expression of illness. The wallpaper needs a visible sequence readers can track. An incomplete wall can be the honest final state, with the restorer documenting rather than disguising her intervention.

  1. Clara notices a wallpaper figure packing a suitcase
  2. Each conservation visit adds another item to the bag
  3. Ruth remembers a woman forbidden to leave the house
  4. Clara's repairs repeatedly seal the figure back into place
  5. A client demands exact preservation of the original pattern
  6. The pattern begins reproducing Clara's belongings
  7. She distinguishes conserving material from preserving the coercion embedded in it
  8. Ruth supplies the missing woman's own departure account
  9. Clara opens a deliberate break in the pattern with the owner's informed refusal recorded
  10. The figure leaves and the wall remains visibly incomplete
Characters
  • Clara Neri, 43. Wallpaper conservator
