The Captain Is an Escape Pod

A salvage crew discovers that its new captain exists inside an escape pod that cannot leave the ship. The captain remembers an evacuation the rest of the crew denies.

How it begins

The new captain arrived in a box marked DO NOT REUSE.

Lin had seen the label on life-support filters, pressure seals and one particularly disappointing birthday cake.

Never on a commanding officer.

The escape pod was orange, dented and too small to contain anyone with the rank the paperwork described.

"Connect it to the bridge," the voice inside said.

Lin checked the manifest.

No occupant listed.

"Who am I speaking to?"

"Your captain."

"Name?"

A pause.

Then a string of numbers long enough to sound defensive.

Oren stood behind her with a medical scanner. He had stopped chewing the corner of his ration bar.

"That voice," he said.

The pod's status light turned blue.

"Doctor Pike. You took longer than expected."

Oren put down the scanner.

Lin looked between them.

The salvage contract said they had recovered the pod from an empty sector. No distress signal. No listed survivors. A routine retrieval complicated by the object's stubborn refusal to switch off.

"Connect me," the voice repeated. "We have people to collect."

"From where?"

The bridge screens lit without her permission.

A star chart unfolded across the main display. At its center blinked a station Lin had watched being decommissioned on the news.

Twelve years earlier.

Oren left the compartment.

Lin waited until the door closed.

"Is he ill?"

"No," the captain said.

"Do you know him?"

"That depends which version of the evacuation you were given."

She examined the pod's exterior.

Along one seam, beneath the warning label, somebody had scratched twelve small vertical lines.

Passenger count, perhaps.

Or days.

The final line was unfinished.

Lin connected a diagnostic cable instead of the bridge link.

Inside the pod, something began to hum.

Not an engine.

A lullaby.

On her screen, a life-sign counter appeared.

Twelve.

Then thirteen.

The captain spoke more softly.

"Please hurry. They've been waiting a very long time."

Outline and characters

Develop this idea

A sentient-spaceship mystery needs a carefully limited point of access. Let readers hear the captain and observe what the pod controls before learning what is inside. Contradictory medical and navigation records can form a fair puzzle if each has a clear origin. Lin should solve the problem through repair and attention, while Oren has a morally difficult reason to withhold information. Your version might place the intelligence in a different emergency device, preserving the question of whom a rescue record leaves out.

  1. Lin is ordered to connect an escape pod to the bridge
  2. The pod's occupant takes command without leaving its shell
  3. Oren recognizes instructions from an evacuation he denies attending
  4. The ship's records show the crew aboard two places at once
  5. The captain reveals it preserved an abandoned command simulation
  6. A rescue authority demands the pod be destroyed as faulty equipment
  7. Lin discovers real survivors erased from the official evacuation count
  8. Oren admits helping conceal who was left behind
  9. The crew uses the pod's memory to locate the survivors
  10. The captain chooses a new role that does not require pretending to be human
Characters
  • Lin Marr, 33. Salvage engineer assigned to a captain sealed inside an escape pod
  • Oren Pike, 48. Ship's medic whose records contradict the remembered evacuation
Series possibilities
  • Lin retrieves a navigation beacon that recognizes her as a passenger she never was.

Make it your kind of story.
