The Bride Beneath the Wallpaper
A wallpaper conservator uncovers a different bride beneath every layer of a manor's walls.
ImagineYourBook writes a fresh draft from this idea.
How it begins
The first bride was missing her hands.
Rose found her beneath three layers of wallpaper and a century of tasteful decisions.
A pale face. A high collar. A veil disappearing into a pattern of roses.
Where the hands should have been, someone had painted a locked door.
Rose set down her scraper.
She had restored enough old houses to know that decoration concealed many things. Damp. Bad plaster. A previous owner's enthusiasm for orange.
Not usually a person.
"Elias?"
The archivist appeared in the doorway carrying a box of photographs.
She pointed.
He stopped.
"That room wasn't included."
"It's the room you gave me."
"A mistake."
"Whose?"
He looked at the wall instead of answering.
Rose peeled back another strip.
A second bride emerged beside the first. Different dress. Different decade. The same locked door where her hands should have been.
Elias put the box on the floor.
"Please don't."
Conservators heard that often. Usually from people who had commissioned restoration without accepting what restoration meant.
Rose reached for her camera.
The flash revealed something the work lamp had missed.
A third face.
Her own.
She knew the small scar beside the eyebrow. The slight difference between her eyes. The expression she wore when trying not to look frightened.
The painted dress was unfamiliar.
So was the ring.
Beneath the image, a date had been written in gold.
Tomorrow.
Rose lowered the camera.
Elias was watching her with an expression that contained shame before surprise.
"Who painted this?"
"I don't know."
"But you know what it means."
Rain struck the windows. Somewhere in the house, a door closed softly.
Elias looked toward the corridor.
"My family has always believed the house chooses its brides."
Rose picked up the scraper again.
The steel felt reassuringly ordinary in her hand.
"Then your family," she said, "has been confusing a threat with a tradition."
