The Parallel Universe Is Charging Rent

A housing mediator discovers her building has been leased to three parallel cities. Keeping every resident housed requires negotiating between versions of a community that each believe the others are the mistake.

How it begins

The second rent notice arrived through a door Nora did not own.

It appeared between her kitchen and the wall where she kept the recycling.

A man stepped through carrying a mop.

He looked at her kettle.

Then at her.

"You're in the maintenance cupboard."

"This is my flat."

"Then somebody has done very well with the cupboard."

Nora put down the envelope she had been opening.

Outside her actual front door, the corridor smelled of burnt toast. Beyond the new door, another corridor smelled of rain and a kind of flower she did not recognize.

The man held out a notice.

Her address. His landlord. Three months overdue.

Nora showed him hers.

Same address. Different landlord. Paid through Friday.

He read it carefully.

"Ivo," he said.

"Nora."

"Do you mediate?"

She looked at him.

"The sign on your desk."

A small brass plate stood beside her laptop.

HOUSING MEDIATION. APPOINTMENTS REQUIRED.

Nora turned it facedown.

From the corridor that belonged to her, someone knocked.

Mrs. Bell from downstairs stood outside with a third notice.

"They're saying we have to leave."

Nora compared the three documents on her kitchen table.

Each carried a different company name.

Each described the other occupants as unauthorized.

At the bottom of every page was the same bank reference.

The kettle clicked off.

Through the new doorway, a child called for someone to hurry up with the mop.

Ivo looked back, then lowered his voice.

"They did this to the next building."

"What happened?"

"By the time we agreed whose corridor it was, there wasn't a corridor left."

Nora took three clean mugs from the cupboard.

Then she turned the brass plate upright.

Mrs. Bell sat first. Ivo left the new door open so his neighbors could hear.

"All right," she said. "First, nobody pays anything they haven't had explained. Second, we need a bigger table."

Outline and characters

Develop this idea

Make the parallel-world rules visible through domestic problems: keys, water, kitchens, and competing floor plans. Nora cannot resolve the conflict by declaring one community unreal. Let residents disagree about practical priorities before discovering shared interests. The landlord's scheme should exploit a specific contractual contradiction, while the climax requires collective coordination rather than a magical claim of rightful ownership. Give each community an ordinary domestic scene.

  1. Nora receives three rent demands for the same building
  2. Residents from different cities begin sharing corridors
  3. The landlord claims each lease permits eviction of the others
  4. Nora maps when rooms overlap and where services fail
  5. Ivo reveals a previous block emptied through the same scheme
  6. The three communities disagree about which version is original
  7. A synchronized payment deadline threatens to collapse shared space
  8. Residents establish common demands while preserving their differences
  9. They expose the landlord's incompatible contracts and stabilize access cooperatively
  10. The building becomes jointly governed without pretending its worlds are identical
Characters
  • Nora Sen, 46. Housing mediator
  • Ivo Bell, 52. Resident caretaker from a parallel city
