How it begins

There was one bed, two weather presenters and a roof that had started making predictions of its own.

Beth put a saucepan beneath the first leak.

Elliot put a second saucepan beneath the first saucepan.

"That seems optimistic," she said.

"It's a developing system."

On television, he was famous for explaining storms with his sleeves rolled up. In person, he appeared to have brought more hair products than socks.

She had brought three backup batteries and no intention of finding him funny.

The station radio crackled.

Road closed until morning.

Beth looked at the window. Snow had erased the track they had climbed twenty minutes earlier.

Elliot checked his phone.

"No signal."

"Did the mountain not see your subscriber count?"

He put the phone away.

The bedroom door stood open behind him. A burst pipe had flooded the second sleeping area. The remaining bed was narrow, clean and covered by a blanket featuring cheerful penguins.

Beth pointed at the chair.

"I'll take that."

"You'll have to fight the leak for it."

A drop landed exactly where her shoulder would have been.

She looked at the saucepan.

Then at Elliot.

"We can establish a border."

"I was hoping for a ceasefire."

Her tablet sounded an alert.

At the same moment, his laptop did too.

Beth glanced at his screen before she could stop herself.

The incoming report used a station code she knew.

It was not in the national network.

It belonged to a retired farmer who sent her handwritten measurements every evening and had asked never to be named.

Elliot closed the laptop.

"Private message."

"From North Ridge?"

He stopped moving.

Outside, the wind lifted a sheet of snow from the roof. The sound was closer to tearing cloth than weather.

Beth set down the saucepan.

"How long have you been using that source?"

Elliot looked at the penguin blanket.

"That depends," he said, "on whether we're still fighting."
