No Saints at Check-In
An insurance investigator poses as a hotel night manager beside the owner she suspects. The guests arrive with compensation claims dated before their accidents.
ImagineYourBook writes a fresh draft from this idea.
How it begins
The first guest asked for compensation before checking in.
Sophie looked at the form.
"What happened?"
"Nothing yet."
The man smiled as if this were a perfectly ordinary answer.
Behind him, the lobby clock struck eleven. It was twenty minutes fast. Sophie had already noted this on her inspection sheet, beside the cracked exit sign and the vase positioned to conceal a damp patch.
"I'm sorry," she said. "I need an incident date."
"It's there."
Tomorrow.
She looked at the guest again.
He wore a clean raincoat over expensive pajamas.
"Perhaps you'd like to speak to the owner."
"He's why I'm speaking to you."
A voice behind Sophie said, "Mr. Penn, your room is ready."
Vincent Hale crossed the lobby without looking at the compensation form.
Sophie had seen his photograph in the insurer's file. The photograph had made him look indifferent. In person he looked like a man carefully rationing sleep.
Mr. Penn picked up his suitcase.
"I requested the west wing."
"I know."
"Then please don't disappoint me."
When he had gone, Sophie laid the form between herself and Vincent.
"Tomorrow?"
"A clerical error."
"Your guest hasn't had an accident."
"An encouraging start to his stay."
She waited.
Vincent looked at the clock.
"Your agency said you had hotel experience."
"They were correct."
"They neglected to mention your interest in insurance."
Sophie kept her hands flat on the desk.
"You checked."
"You check. I check."
The clock struck again.
A single, unnecessary note.
Vincent's expression changed.
He turned toward the west corridor.
Sophie followed his gaze to a brass bell on the wall. Beneath it, a card instructed night staff never to answer a second ring.
The bell rang once.
Mr. Penn appeared at the far end of the corridor.
He was carrying his compensation form.
"The room," he said pleasantly, "is exactly as expected."
