Both Husbands Remember
A woman returns from a business trip to find a second set of anniversary photographs.
ImagineYourBook writes a fresh draft from this idea.
How it begins
There were two wedding albums on the kitchen table.
Helen recognized one.
The other was better bound.
She set down her suitcase and opened it.
Same church. Same rain. Same terrible arrangement of lilies blocking her mother's face in the group photograph.
Different husband.
She turned the page.
A man she had never seen was laughing beneath the umbrella she had bought that morning from a petrol station. Her hand rested on his chest with the careless certainty of someone who knew where she belonged.
The kettle clicked off behind her.
"Long journey?"
The man from the photograph stood beside the cooker.
Helen did not scream.
Later, she would resent the amount of credit people gave her for this. Fear did not always arrive in its expected costume. Sometimes it stood very still and counted the exits.
"Where's David?"
The man frowned.
"I am David."
Her phone vibrated.
A message from her husband.
Running late. Put the kettle on?
She looked from the screen to the man.
He looked at the phone.
For a moment, his confusion seemed as complete as hers.
"Who is that?"
Helen backed toward the hallway.
The man raised both hands.
"Please. I don't understand."
Neither did she.
On his wrist was a pale band where a hospital bracelet had recently been removed.
Her husband had worn one like it after the accident.
But this man's hands were different. Longer fingers. A scar across the knuckle where her husband had none.
"What's our first address?" she asked.
He answered correctly.
"What did I break on our honeymoon?"
"The blue bowl. You blamed the cat."
There had been no cat.
She had invented it because she was embarrassed, and David had spent twelve years asking after its health.
The front-door lock turned.
Both of them looked toward the sound.
Her husband stepped inside carrying flowers.
He saw the other man.
The flowers fell before he said anything.
