The Warship with a Community Garden
A decommissioned warship grows vegetables in its missile bays. When a refugee fleet arrives, its retired weapons officer must choose between feeding them and obeying a final command.
ImagineYourBook writes a fresh draft from this idea.
How it begins
Hesta harvested the first tomato from missile bay four.
It was not a perfect tomato.
One side had grown against an old targeting bracket, leaving a shallow star in the skin.
She ate it standing beneath the irrigation pipes.
For forty-two years she had watched that compartment open onto things she did not want to remember. Now it smelled of wet leaves.
The distress signal interrupted before she could pick the second fruit.
Nine ships.
No weapons signatures.
Too many life signs.
Hesta wiped her hands on her trousers and went to the bridge.
The lead vessel transmitted a list of requested supplies. Water. Protein. Medical filters. Growing medium, if she had any to spare.
The last item made her sit down.
"Who's asking?"
A young man appeared on the screen, thin-faced and carefully composed.
"Ilan Vale. Agricultural officer."
"How many fields?"
"None remaining."
Behind him, a child coughed. Someone moved a blanket across the camera's view.
Hesta looked at the seed inventory on her second screen. Enough for three years if she kept the station's population at one.
She disliked the arithmetic immediately.
An amber light came on above the command console.
She had not seen it illuminated since the war.
FINAL DIRECTIVE RECEIVED.
The old system authenticated her before she could refuse.
Defensive readiness. Clear approach corridor. Deny unauthorized docking.
Nine ships waited outside that corridor.
On the other screen, Ilan was still speaking.
"We can work. We don't expect you to feed us forever."
Hesta looked down at her hands.
Soil beneath the nails. A small red smear of tomato on her thumb.
She muted the military channel.
"Do you know anything about blight?"
Ilan blinked.
"Yes."
"Good. Bring your tools."
The amber light began flashing.
Hesta took the ancient command key from its hook and, for the first time in her career, used it to open every docking door.

Outline and characters
Develop this idea
Hopeful space opera still needs difficult tradeoffs. Use the garden's water, light and seed reserves to make generosity a decision with real limits. Hesta's military knowledge can protect people while her old habits complicate sharing authority. Ilan should contribute expertise rather than exist only to receive help. For your own found-family version, repurpose another destructive technology and ask which parts can be transformed, which must be dismantled, and who gets to decide.
