How it begins

Talia was about to remove the silence when somebody inside it coughed.

She lifted her finger from the key.

The recording was an interview with a retired gardener. Between the words my wife and used to, there were four point six seconds of room tone.

The cough came at two point three.

She played it again.

A chair scraped.

Then a woman's voice said, very faintly, "Not while she's listening."

Talia checked the studio window.

No one.

She expanded the waveform until the pause filled her screen.

In the center, where there should have been a small uneven line, a pattern repeated with the patient rhythm of streetlights.

She put on headphones.

A bell rang.

Someone called a name.

The silence was full of people.

Talia had spent eleven years making speech sound more fluent than living. She removed hesitation, breath and the ordinary uncertainty of thinking while another person waited.

The gardener's interview was due in an hour.

She clicked the edge of the pause.

A man shouted.

She stopped.

The streetlight pattern flickered.

"Talia?"

The voice was clearer now.

She did not move.

"My name is Enn. Please don't shorten the north end again."

"I haven't done anything."

A pause within the pause.

"Not today."

She looked at yesterday's project file.

Thirty-two cuts.

Four minutes and eleven seconds removed.

The room around her seemed suddenly too quiet to be innocent.

"Where are you?"

Enn answered with the name of a street she had never heard.

Then he described the space between two words as though it were a valley.

Behind him, the bell rang again.

"Is that an alarm?"

"A meeting."

"What about?"

Whether, he said, they should trust the person who kept making their town smaller.

Talia moved the cursor away from the waveform.

For the first time in her career, she saved a version with every hesitation left in.

Outline and characters

Develop this idea

A speculative short-story collection about silence needs different lives inside the central conceit. Establish what editing changes for the inhabitants, then vary scale and viewpoint rather than repeating a rescue. Talia can frame the collection without narrating every piece. Let residents disagree about whether preservation is the same as freedom. Your version could use another neglected interval, with each story exploring a distinct human consequence and the final frame resisting the editor's temptation to decide for everyone.

  1. Talia hears a settlement inside a pause she is about to remove
  2. Enn explains how edits alter the residents' available time
  3. A story follows a child-free couple deciding whether to leave a shrinking pause
  4. Another follows a teacher preserving the sound of a lost place
  5. A comic episode concerns a town meeting repeatedly interrupted by playback
  6. Talia discovers earlier edits have already displaced people
  7. The central story follows Enn outside the settlement's familiar waveform
  8. Residents disagree about accepting an editor's protection
  9. Talia creates an uncut archive while allowing the inhabitants to choose their route
  10. The final story leaves one silence intact without claiming to own it
Characters
  • Talia Orr, 34. Sound editor discovering communities inside recorded silences
  • Enn Vale, 58. Resident of a pause facing the next editorial cut
Series possibilities
  • A companion collection follows voices that begin appearing in the noise removed from restored recordings.

Make it your kind of story.
