The Aliens Have Resigned

After quietly managing Earth for centuries, its alien caretakers hand in their notice. A human building superintendent inherits the maintenance instructions. A translator helps her discover which apparent laws of nature are optional services, and why the caretakers are afraid to explain their departure.

How it begins

The alien caretakers left their resignation under Maya's boiler-room door.

Two pages. Three signatures. A request to return all planetary keys by Friday.

Maya Fen, fifty-six, building superintendent, read it beside a leaking radiator and decided somebody in Flat Six had acquired a printer.

Then the service hatch behind the boiler opened onto a room containing the moon.

Not a photograph. The moon, turning slowly above a desk piled with maintenance tickets.

A small figure in worn coveralls looked up.

'We meant to arrange a handover.'

Maya set down the spanner.

'You can begin now.'

By noon she had learned that the office managed several apparently natural services, that the caretakers had worked on Earth for centuries, and that none of them had understood the distinction between a superintendent and a planetary government.

Tobias Lin arrived carrying the emergency translation unit. Forty-one, freelance interpreter, currently the only person willing to translate a sentence that included both tidal compensation and unused holiday entitlement.

'Why are you resigning?' he asked.

The figure consulted the other signatures.

'We are no longer permitted to explain that while employed.'

Maya examined the manual. Some entries were reassuringly ordinary. Inspection dates. Backup arrangements. Warnings not to improvise. Others were less so.

COINCIDENCE DISTRIBUTION: OPTIONAL.

LUNAR DRIFT ASSISTANCE: REVIEW DUE.

GRAVITATIONAL COURTESIES: DO NOT CANCEL WITHOUT REPLACEMENT.

She closed the manual before the words could become an invitation to experiment.

'Who is responsible after Friday?'

'According to the new contract, nobody.'

Outside, the building's lift began playing an unfamiliar farewell tune. Every floor button lit at once.

Tobias looked at the moon above the desk.

'You are not retiring,' he said. 'You're escaping.'

The caretaker's shoulders dropped.

Maya recognized the expression. It belonged to someone who had spent too long keeping a system working because the people above them found failure cheaper.

She pulled up a chair.

'All right,' she said. 'Show us the part of the manual they hoped we wouldn't read.'

Develop this idea

The planetary services are invented comic cosmology, not corrections to real physical laws. Maya's usefulness comes from maintenance habits, honest questions, and knowing when not to improvise. Tobias must translate limits as carefully as possibilities. The caretakers deserve an exit rather than being coerced into indefinite service because humans like the arrangement. Keep the handover collaborative and bounded, with a practical payoff more interesting than appointing one superintendent to govern Earth.

  1. Maya receives a resignation notice and discovers a hidden planetary maintenance office.
  2. Tobias translates a manual that separates essential support from optional interventions.
  3. They preserve existing safeguards and involve a broader human team rather than experimenting with natural-seeming services.
  4. The caretakers reveal a new contract that would abandon Earth while concealing responsibility.
  5. Human institutions compete for control of the office before understanding its limits.
  6. Maya identifies the caretakers' undocumented work and the obligations their employer excluded from the contract.
  7. Tobias finds a way for the departing workers to give evidence without surrendering their right to leave.
  8. A proposed replacement service would make Earth dependent on the same exploitative terms.
  9. Humans and caretakers negotiate a limited handover with transparent responsibilities and independent oversight.
  10. The office closes its old contract, while the former caretakers choose whether to remain on Earth as neighbors rather than invisible servants.
Characters
  • Maya Fen, 56. Building superintendent
  • Tobias Lin, 41. Emergency translator
Series possibilities
  • The newly visible maintenance office handles smaller cosmic disputes without pretending humanity now understands every system it has inherited.
