A Secret Society of Tour Guides

Tour guides across a city begin adding the same invented fact to unrelated walks. A guide who refuses the script and an accessibility auditor discover that the harmless fiction directs visitors away from one ordinary building scheduled to disappear before anyone asks what happened there.

How it begins

Elena Price heard the invented fact for the third time beside a building with no plaque.

'This window was once the smallest theater in the city,' the guide told his group.

It had not been. It was a ventilation opening for a municipal laundry. Elena knew because her grandmother had worked there and complained about the heat for the rest of her life.

She let the group pass. Tour guides borrowed one another's jokes. They did not usually borrow exact lies about buildings nobody wanted to look at.

Across the street, Jonah Reed measured the width of a temporary ramp. He had a clipboard strapped to one wrist and the focused annoyance of a man discovering a familiar problem in new paint.

'You heard that?' Elena asked.

'The theater? Yesterday it was a bakery.'

'Who said so?'

'A guide with a red umbrella.'

Elena carried a blue one. She closed it and watched the next group turn away from the old laundry. Their route led neatly toward the festival's sponsored square.

Jonah showed her the accessibility map. The laundry passage was marked closed, though its gate stood open.

'Why route everyone around it?' she asked.

'They say the paving is unsafe.'

She looked down. The stones were smoother than those on her approved walk.

A workman emerged from the laundry carrying a box of brass plaques, all face down. He put them in a van before either of them could read the inscriptions.

Elena took a photograph of the registration plate. Jonah wrote down the time. Neither pretended this made them investigators. It merely made them two people who might remember the same thing accurately.

Her telephone vibrated. A message from the guides' association announced a compulsory script update.

The new opening sentence described the city's proud tradition of remembering ordinary lives. Elena looked at the blank wall and decided she would not read it aloud.

Develop this idea

Keep the conspiracy operationally small and credible: route permissions, scripted facts and removed plaques can accomplish more than an all-powerful secret order. Elena's livelihood should be at risk without making every other guide complicit by nature. Jonah's access expertise contributes evidence and practical stakes. Research heritage review and demolition timelines in the invented jurisdiction, and distinguish legitimate accessibility restrictions from convenient excuses rather than dismissing safety concerns generally.

  1. Elena notices identical invented facts redirecting tour groups.
  2. Jonah finds accessibility closures unsupported by the actual paving.
  3. Script updates remove the laundry from every approved route.
  4. A vanished plaque links the site to an unresolved compensation promise.
  5. The guides' association threatens Elena's festival access.
  6. Jonah distinguishes genuine safety work from manufactured barriers.
  7. An apparent secret society proves divided over protecting jobs.
  8. The leads preserve verifiable records before demolition.
  9. Guides collectively refuse the false script and support a public review.
  10. The site gains accurate interpretation and an accessible route chosen with former workers.
