How it begins

The umbrella opened on a Tuesday that had happened twenty years earlier.

Tomas stood in his shop holding the handle.

Above him, inside the faded blue canopy, a woman laughed.

He knew the laugh before he saw the street.

His wife stood outside the old bakery with flour on her sleeve. She was younger than he remembered her being and older than she had ever looked in the photograph beside his till.

Someone out of view said something.

She laughed again.

Then the scene closed, leaving only blue fabric and one bent rib.

Tomas lowered the umbrella.

Across the counter, Ada Bell waited with a repair ticket.

"Can it be fixed?"

He looked at the date on the ticket.

Today.

The shop around him was unchanged. Rain against the window. A kettle beginning to complain. Three umbrellas drying in a bucket by the door.

"Yes," he said.

Ada smiled.

"It belonged to my sister."

"Did she know my wife?"

He had not intended to ask.

Ada's smile changed, not disappearing exactly.

"Everybody knew your wife."

That was true.

It was also an answer designed to leave something untouched.

Tomas turned the umbrella over.

A small patch near the edge had been sewn with green thread. He remembered his wife coming home with that thread caught in her cuff.

He had asked whether she had mended something.

She had said, "Only the afternoon."

At the time he had been reading a bill.

He had not looked up.

Now Ada reached into her bag for her purse.

"How much?"

Tomas placed the umbrella on the workbench.

"No charge until I know what it needs."

After she left, he opened it again.

This time, before the laughter, he heard his wife say a name.

It was not his.

The rain outside grew gentler, but he did not notice.

Outline and characters

Develop this idea

Let the magic preserve small moments rather than provide a complete or authoritative account of the past. Tomas's grief can coexist with humor, work, and affection for neighbors. Ada needs her own relationship to the memory, not merely a role in his recovery. The emotional turn should widen his understanding of his wife's life without making him relinquish the love they actually shared.
