The Reunion Has a Spare Suspect
A school reunion organizer finds an extra name on a memorial list: a woman sitting alive at the dinner table. Untangling the mistake exposes a crime the class has agreed to remember as kindness.
ImagineYourBook writes a fresh draft from this idea.
How it begins
Anna had just asked everyone to remember the absent when Miriam Hale raised her hand.
It was not an appropriate moment for questions.
On the screen behind the lectern, Miriam's school photograph glowed beneath the words FOREVER PART OF OUR YEAR.
At table nine, the adult Miriam looked embarrassed.
"I'm sorry," she said. "I think there's been a mistake."
A fork struck a plate.
Anna turned toward the screen, then back to the woman she had greeted twenty minutes earlier. Same dark eyes. Same narrow scar through one eyebrow. Miriam had joked about the school wine and asked where to leave her coat.
There was no possibility Anna had mistaken her for someone else.
"I'll stop the slides," Anna said.
From the front row, their former head of year stood.
"No need to make a fuss."
The room settled around his voice with a familiarity Anna disliked.
"It's a clerical error," he continued. "Let's move on."
Miriam's raised hand lowered slowly.
Anna searched the laptop for the exit key.
A second slide appeared.
MIRIAM HALE MEMORIAL SCHOLARSHIP. TWENTY YEARS OF OPPORTUNITY.
The photograph beneath it showed the former head of year presenting a certificate to a smiling girl.
Miriam pushed back her chair.
"Twenty years?"
Nobody answered.
Anna found the key and darkened the screen. Her own reflection appeared in it, small and indistinct.
She had collected the memorial names from the school archive. The list had looked official. Someone had added dates, photographs, and a note requesting respectful treatment.
At the bottom was a handwritten instruction she had taken for an old administrator's reminder.
DO NOT CONTACT THE FAMILY.
Anna looked at the man in the front row.
He was watching Miriam, not the screen.
Around the hall, former classmates studied their glasses with the concentration of people waiting for someone else to speak.
For the first time that evening, he seemed afraid of somebody remembering correctly.

Develop this idea
The reunion can expose how a group turns a comforting account into a shared defense. Give Miriam control over what she discloses rather than making her suffering a puzzle prize. Seed the identity discrepancy in ordinary school records and photographs. Anna's responsibility is to preserve evidence and stop repeating the lie, not to extract public confession from everyone at dinner.
