Our Honeymoon Was Sponsored by Bad Luck
An adult raffle winner and a skeptical documentary editor share a travel prize after a booking error. Their escalating mishaps become an honest film about enjoying a future nobody carefully planned.
ImagineYourBook writes a fresh draft from this idea.
How it begins
Rae won the honeymoon without acquiring a spouse.
The raffle organizer said this was an administrative detail. The travel company said it made no difference. The man waiting beneath her name at the airport appeared less certain.
“I think,” he said, “we should compare paperwork.”
His itinerary included her flight, her hotel and a schedule labeled AUTHENTIC ROMANTIC CONTENT.
Hers included breakfast.
Rae set down her suitcase.
“Who are you?”
“Nabil Holt. Editor.”
“Of romance?”
“Documentaries. Usually about things that don't object to the description.”
She read the schedule.
A sunset walk. A surprise dinner. An intimate conversation beside the sea.
“I haven't agreed to any of this.”
“I can see that.”
He crossed out the first activity before asking another question.
It was a small action, but Rae noticed it.
For six years she had organized the school office's fundraising raffle. This year she bought a ticket during a difficult week, won an improbable holiday and decided to go before she could invent a reason to give it away.
She had packed three books and no interesting personal history for a camera.
Outside, rain struck the terminal roof.
Their transfer bus had left.
Nabil looked at the crossed-out schedule, then at the information desk.
“May I help find another way?”
“You can help carry the suitcase.”
“It has wheels.”
“One is decorative.”
They made it to the bus stop beneath a borrowed umbrella. A local driver drew a map on the back of the romantic-content plan. Rae found the correct fare. Nabil kept the umbrella over the map until both his sleeves were soaked.
No camera appeared.
At the last stop, they walked down a lane smelling of wet flowers and warm bread.
Rae looked at the ruined schedule.
“What were we meant to do now?”
“Sunset.”
She looked at the solid gray sky.
“Excellent. We've missed nothing.”
Nabil laughed, and for the first time the prize felt like something she had actually won.
