Our First Date Is a Séance

A skeptical event planner and an adult medium agree to one fake date at a disastrously sincere séance. The ghost has a request; their growing attraction has no useful script.

How it begins

Nadia's date arrived carrying six candles, a packet of biscuits, and a warning not to mention her grandmother.

“Is that a personal preference?” she asked.

“Professional.”

She checked the ballroom clock. Guests would arrive in forty minutes. The sponsor expected a romantic evening of mystery. Her former husband expected her to attend alone. Nadia expected the ceiling drapes to collapse unless someone found a taller ladder.

Felix set the biscuits on the séance table.

“Remind me of the arrangement.”

“You are my date. You say very little. At ten, you conduct a tasteful demonstration using whatever harmless technique you usually employ.”

“And if someone answers?”

“Improvise.”

He looked at her with an expression she had seen on electricians inspecting wet sockets.

Nadia handed him a name badge. It read FELIX, CLOSE FRIEND.

“Convincing,” he said.

“I ran out of smaller letters.”

They sat opposite each other to test the table lighting. Felix joined his hands loosely. Nadia watched for wires. She found none, although the hotel had been creative with its fire regulations.

“Anyone wishing to speak?” he asked.

A chair scraped behind Nadia.

An elderly woman in a pale green suit sat down between them.

“Not particularly,” the woman said. “But I object to the seating.”

Nadia stood so quickly her badge fell into a candleholder.

Felix closed his eyes.

“I did warn you.”

The woman examined the event program. Through her sleeve, Nadia could see the gold print.

“An evening of eternal love,” she read. “How exhausting.”

Nadia reached for her phone, then stopped. There was no contact saved for this.

The woman looked from one of them to the other.

“You two are pretending.”

Felix gave Nadia a small, apologetic smile.

“For the next four hours,” Nadia said.

“Good,” said the ghost. “Then you can stop now and help me find the person who booked this room.”

Outline and characters

Develop this idea

Make Felix's work a profession with boundaries rather than endless access to convenient answers. Nadia's skepticism can be thoughtful, not cruel. The fake relationship needs a limited purpose both adults understand. Let the ghost have a concrete request unrelated to making the couple kiss. Their attraction should survive the moment they stop performing a charming version of themselves for an audience.

  1. Nadia recruits Felix for a social cover story.
  2. A rehearsal summons an unexpected guest.
  3. The ghost objects to the scripted romance.
  4. Hotel records reveal an unfinished agreement.
  5. Nadia and Felix negotiate honest boundaries.
  6. Their fake date becomes publicly convincing.
  7. A sponsor demands a fabricated revelation.
  8. They risk the event to tell the truth.
  9. The ghost completes a practical final request.
  10. They arrange a first date without witnesses.
