ImagineYourBook writes a fresh draft from this idea.

How it begins

The first tenant paid six months in advance and asked whether the basement had a view.

Helen thought it was a joke.

She sent a photograph of the small window at pavement level.

Excellent, the reply said. I have always wondered what rain looks like from underneath.

The payment cleared that afternoon.

By evening, three more applications had arrived.

Helen showed them to Arthur while he was repairing a chair that had become a family argument.

"Perhaps we priced it too low."

"It's storage," he said. "Not a hotel."

"They're very polite."

She opened the first form again.

Occupation: undecided.

Date of birth: 2041.

Arthur put down his screwdriver.

"Scam."

"The money's real."

"That's how they start."

At nine, the basement doorbell rang.

They did not have a basement doorbell.

Helen followed the sound down the stairs. A brass button had appeared beside the inner door, fixed neatly to plaster Arthur had painted last weekend.

On the other side, something shifted.

Not a footstep. More like a box being carefully set down.

"Hello?" she called.

"Thank you for having us."

A woman's voice. Adult, calm, faintly familiar.

"How did you get in?"

"The agreement was accepted."

Helen tried the handle.

Locked.

Behind her, Arthur switched on the stair light.

A parcel lay on the bottom step.

Neither of them had put it there.

He opened it before she could stop him.

Inside was a photograph of Arthur receiving an award. He looked older, happier and entirely untroubled by the career he had given up to care for his father.

Beside him stood Helen.

But not Helen as she was now.

This woman had the same face and none of its tiredness.

Arthur touched the photograph with one finger.

From behind the door, the voice asked, "Would you like to see what else you kept?"

Helen looked up at the narrow strip of their kitchen, bright and ordinary above the stairs.

For the first time, it seemed very far away.
