How it begins

The detective asked whether I had let a woman into my house last Thursday.

I said no.

He asked whether I was certain.

I said I worked in a school office. I was certain about Thursdays.

He turned his tablet toward me.

There I was, holding the front door open.

The woman beside me wore a green coat and carried a cake box. I took the box from her. We laughed. My hand rested briefly on her shoulder.

"That's not possible," I said.

The detective had the practiced patience of a man who heard that often.

"My husband installed the camera."

"Yes."

"He would know if somebody had altered it."

"Would he?"

I looked at our hallway behind the detective. The narrow table. The bowl of keys. The umbrella stand we had bought on our honeymoon and spent nineteen years disliking.

Everything exactly where it should be.

On the tablet, the woman stepped over the threshold.

The detective paused the recording.

"Do you know her name?"

"No."

"She says you do."

He opened another clip.

Same woman. Different coat. A parcel instead of a cake. I welcomed her with a little theatrical bow I had not made since my daughter was young.

Then another.

And another.

Seventeen visits.

In six of them, I was wearing clothes I no longer owned.

I asked the detective to play the first one again.

From the tablet came our familiar doorbell, followed by a small metallic rattle.

I looked at the umbrella stand.

We had thrown it away in March.

"Can you hear that?" I asked.

The detective stopped the clip.

Outside, our real doorbell rang.

Through the frosted glass I could see a woman's green sleeve and the white corner of a cake box.

My husband came down the stairs.

"Oh, good," he said. "You're both here."

The detective stood, but I reached the door before either of them could decide what I knew.
