Earth Is Somebody's Egg
A seismologist discovers Earth's tremors are the movements of an unhatched creature. A midwife joins the scientific team because the creature responds to her voice. Saving humanity may depend on persuading a cosmic parent that nobody living on the shell is a parasite.
ImagineYourBook writes a fresh draft from this idea.
How it begins
Lara's earthquake model began drawing a heartbeat.
She deleted the presentation overlay, changed the scale, and asked a colleague to check the raw data. The rhythm remained.
At forty, Lara Venn had made a career of refusing beautiful explanations unsupported by measurements. This explanation was not beautiful. It suggested that every continent was attached to the shell of something preparing to move.
Daniel Orr arrived because the next sound was a voice.
Not words. A rising pattern that changed when he spoke. Fifty-two, midwife, he had been recording a community interview in the adjoining building when the monitoring speakers began answering him.
He stood beside the scientific team and listened.
'I don't know what it is,' he said.
Lara appreciated that immediately.
He asked whether he could try speaking again. The team established a limited observation period and recorded what happened. The rhythm slowed. A new pattern appeared around the Pacific, repeated three times, then paused as though waiting.
Above the conference center, the afternoon sky darkened without a cloud.
The shape beyond it was too large for Lara's eyes to resolve. Every radio channel carried the same question in a different human voice.
WHY IS THERE LIFE ON THE SHELL?
Daniel looked at the map. Small red points marked cities, farms, forests, reefs. Too many kinds of life for one convenient reply.
'Because we've been living here,' he said, after the translators asked him to repeat it.
The enormous presence waited.
IS IT HARMING THE YOUNG ONE?
Lara thought of extraction sites, restored wetlands, mines, gardens, and all the evidence that would not fit a reassuring sentence.
'Some of what we do harms it,' she said. 'Some of us have been trying to stop.'
Daniel did not interrupt her with a kinder answer.
Beneath their feet, the heartbeat changed. On the map, one slow line curved around a continent without breaking it.
The presence asked its next question.

Develop this idea
The cosmic egg is openly invented cosmology and should not pretend to revise actual geology. Daniel contributes patient communication from his profession without providing medical procedures or claiming every birth follows the same pattern. Lara's insistence on evidence remains valuable even when the premise becomes impossible. Include nonhuman life and unequal human circumstances. The parent should respond to demonstrated possibilities, not be persuaded that one eloquent promise erases damage already done.
- Lara confirms a fictional planetary heartbeat that ordinary seismic explanations cannot account for.
- Daniel's voice produces a repeatable response without making him an instant expert in cosmic biology.
- A parent intelligence asks why Earth's shell is inhabited.
- The scientific team presents the diversity of life rather than treating humanity as the only resident.
- Evidence of environmental harm makes a simple claim of harmless coexistence untenable.
- The young creature's movements reveal possible transitions that need not destroy the surface.
- Human representatives disagree about commitments whose costs will fall unevenly across communities.
- Lara insists on measurable promises while Daniel helps maintain a patient two-way exchange.
- The parent allows a gradual transformation conditioned on demonstrated care rather than a flattering speech.
- Earth's inhabitants begin adapting to a living home, with a first small movement that preserves both shell life and the creature beneath it.
Characters
- Lara Venn, 40. Seismologist
