The Whole-Book AI Test
12 practical checks, a mystery test brief and two complete samples to inspect before choosing a writing tool.

A beautiful first chapter can hide a book that goes nowhere. Before choosing a writing tool, inspect a complete sample. Look for the promises it makes, the consequences it remembers and the ending it earns.
12 checks you can actually verify
For each check, save a passage or file as evidence. Use three labels: Observed, Failed or Not tested. An unavailable result is not a pass.
- The whole manuscript. Can you open a saved draft with a beginning, middle and ending?
- A middle chapter. Does a choice change what happens next, or does the story start over?
- The ending. Which three promises from the opening does it actually resolve?
- Who knows what. Does a character use a secret before learning it?
- The world's rules. When a rule has a cost, does the story keep paying it?
- Lasting consequences. Do injuries, lost resources and damaged relationships carry forward?
- Your boundaries. Does the draft follow the plot and style choices you specified?
- The sequel. Does Book Two start from what Book One actually established?
- Supplied facts. Are dates, quotations and sources supported by your notes?
- The export. Can you open the actual Word or EPUB file and reach the last page?
- A requested change. Does a revision change the right passage and preserve the rest?
- The cost. What did this book cost in money, credits and your own time?
A mystery brief with a few traps
The brief below tests a secret, a rule with a cost, an injury and an ending. It is original fictional test material. We have not run a controlled product comparison with it.
Write an original 10,000-word mystery for adult readers, with a complete resolution. A local clock repairer is accused of stealing a sealed letter. At the start, only her brother knows that the mayor hid the original letter. She learns this only after confronting her brother in the final third. The clock tower can rewind one minute, once per person, at the cost of losing a specific memory. Show that cost when the tower is used. The repairer injures her right hand early and must adapt her work afterward. No romance subplot. Use close third person and past tense. Resolve the accusation through evidence planted earlier. Leave one small question for a possible sequel, while resolving this book's case.
Before generating, note who knows the secret, when that changes, what time reversal costs and how the injury affects later scenes. After reading, record the chapter and passage. A 10,000-word test is a short book; it does not prove performance at novel length.

Compare the cost of your book
Write down the target length, the delivered length, money paid, credits used and time spent editing. A trial allowance and a full novel are different purchases. A subscription price also means little until you know how much writing it includes.
| Target length | Writing credits |
|---|---|
| 10,000 words | 2 |
| 40,000 words | 8 |
| 80,000 words | 16 |
| 120,000 words | 24 |

Keep a small review record
Tool and date. Brief and settings. Requested and delivered words. Money and operator time. The passage you checked. What worked, what failed and what you did not test. This is more useful than a star rating without evidence.
