How it begins

Sofia reached the third paragraph before realizing the wedding speech contained a succession plan.

The fourth mentioned quarterly targets.

She lowered the pages.

“Do you like your brother?”

Rafi Cole looked offended. “Very much.”

“Does he know?”

“I'm his best man.”

“That confirms an appointment. It doesn't answer the question.”

They sat in the hotel garden beneath a white canopy. Beyond the hedge, someone was testing a string quartet. The same bright phrase began, failed and began again.

Rafi took the pages back.

“He asked me to keep it practical.”

“He asked you to keep it under five minutes.”

“Same principle.”

Sofia had coached executives, nervous parents and a woman who needed to apologize to a room full of beekeepers. She recognized the particular stiffness of someone who would rather be considered difficult than be caught wanting to say something tender.

“What do you do?” she asked.

“Demolition.”

She looked at the speech.

“That explains the structure.”

For the first time, he smiled.

She asked him for a memory. He offered three achievements, two school prizes and an account of a plumbing repair.

“One moment,” she said. “When he wasn't impressive.”

Rafi looked past the canopy.

The quartet stopped.

“He used to wait up when I worked late. Said he couldn't sleep with the hallway light on.”

“Was that true?”

“No. He could sleep anywhere.”

Sofia put down her pen.

There it was: a person quietly arranging his life around somebody else's return.

“Tell that.”

Rafi rubbed his thumb over the corner of the page.

“It isn't much.”

“It is to the person coming home.”

He looked at her then, properly, as if the sentence had opened a door he had assumed belonged to the hotel.

Sofia reached for her pen again.

This time she wrote nothing beneath the memory. For once, the right words needed less help than the man preparing to say them.

Outline and characters

Develop this idea

Make the speech's problem specific: it assigns the couple a future rather than celebrating the people present. Rafi can be blunt without being cruel. Sofia's skill should help him express something true, not replace his personality with polished romance. Let their attraction develop through listening. The final toast can stay brief, leaving the stronger emotional declaration for a private conversation afterward.

  1. Sofia reads a disastrously controlling speech.
  2. Rafi refuses a sentimental replacement.
  3. They interview the couple separately.
  4. Rehearsal reveals a shared private joke.
  5. His family demands a flattering performance.
  6. Sofia hides her own failed engagement.
  7. Rafi offers honesty without an audience.
  8. They protect the couple's actual wishes.
  9. The toast leaves room for uncertainty.
  10. He asks her out in his own words.
