How it begins

Celandine announced her retirement on the kitchen window.

The letters appeared in steam above Ruth's breakfast.

FRIDAY. NO EXCEPTIONS.

Ruth looked at the teapot.

“Before the harvest supper?”

The lid rattled.

ESPECIALLY BEFORE THE HARVEST SUPPER.

Outside, the village was arranging another day around the assumption that Celandine would make people feel better. A cup before an argument. A cup after a disappointment. Tea for weddings, funerals and committee meetings in which everyone arrived determined to misunderstand the minutes.

Ruth had inherited the pot with her mother's house.

She had inherited the obligation without noticing.

“Would a holiday help?”

The steam cleared.

A new word appeared.

RETIREMENT.

Ruth sat back.

At sixty-four, she understood the difference. She had closed her commercial pottery last winter and spent three months explaining that making one beautiful bowl did not mean she wanted another hundred orders.

Now she was doing the same thing to a teapot.

“I see.”

Celandine gave a small, relieved whistle.

Ruth took down her clay notebook. She could make another pot. An ordinary one with a comfortable handle, good balance and a spout that did not leak on the tablecloth.

The village would find this offensively modest.

A knock came at the door.

The harvest organizer stood outside with a list.

“Could we have enough cheer for eighty?”

Ruth glanced toward the window.

Celandine had stopped steaming entirely.

“We can have tea,” Ruth said.

“That isn't quite the same.”

“No.”

The organizer considered this.

Behind her, a neighbor carried benches toward the square. Another struggled with a crate of apples. Ruth noticed how much effort had always been present before anybody reached for a magical cup.

She closed the notebook.

“I'll make a pot,” she said. “You can ask three people to help with the washing up.”

From the kitchen came a tiny sound like china settling comfortably on a shelf.

For once, Celandine had nothing further to add.

Outline and characters

Develop this idea

Give the teapot a coherent personality and limits rather than making it an automatic judge of the village. Ruth's pottery should solve ordinary problems too. The community can value the magic while having overlooked the work beneath it. Let retirement include pleasure and chosen participation, without requiring the teapot to prove continued usefulness before it is allowed to stop. Give the teapot a preference nobody can purchase.
