The Recipe Says Nothing About You

A precision chocolatier and a joyful community cook compete for the same market stall. A refrigeration failure forces them to make one impossible dessert and reconsider what success should taste like.

ImagineYourBook writes a fresh draft from this idea.

How it begins

Rosa's chocolate cathedral began leaning toward Leo Merritt's cabbage rolls at ten past ten.

She watched the highest spire bend.

Leo watched her watching it.

“Structural issue?”

“Temperature.”

“Same result.”

The market's refrigeration had failed. In twenty minutes, judges would arrive to choose the stall awarded a permanent corner space. Rosa had built a cathedral because a modest arrangement of chocolates apparently could not express the scale of her ambition.

Leo had brought two enormous pots and a handwritten sign.

People were already queuing.

She touched the cathedral's base. Too soft.

Leo moved an empty tray beneath the leaning tower.

“Can I?”

She wanted to say no. She wanted the room colder, the judges later and the man next door less comfortable with the fact that things went wrong in public.

The spire fell.

He caught it on the tray.

For a moment they both stared at the wreckage.

“Still chocolate,” he said.

Rosa closed her eyes.

When she opened them, he had cleared a space in the shade behind his stall. He did not move her work without asking. He did not suggest that her cathedral had been foolish. He simply stood beside a practical possibility and waited.

“What would you make?” she asked.

“With this?”

“Yes.”

“Something people could eat before it became architecture again.”

She laughed despite herself.

They broke the fallen spire into pieces. Rosa selected flavors. Leo found small paper dishes. A volunteer brought ice from the café, and the market manager began moving the judging order.

Within ten minutes, a queue formed between their stalls.

Rosa wrote a new label.

Leo read it.

“Both names?”

“Both people.”

Across the aisle, the judges arrived beneath a banner promising perfection.

Rosa looked at the damaged cathedral, then at the man handing a carefully portioned disaster to a delighted child.

For once, she could see a future that did not require everything to remain exactly where she had placed it.

Outline and characters

Develop this idea

Both approaches to food should involve skill, labor and knowledge. Rosa's precision is not a substitute for feeling, and Leo's warmth does not exempt him from planning. Their business problem needs believable costs and limits. Let a disagreement over credit reveal a real imbalance, with the romantic resolution following an honest negotiation rather than an attractive person rescuing a failed enterprise.

  1. Rosa's display begins melting before judging.
  2. Leo offers space and an unfashionable solution.

  6. Leo resents being treated as local color.
  7. A public disagreement exposes both ambitions.
