The Prince of Unfinished Bridges

A disgraced bridge builder inherits a title that exists only on the unbuilt half of a crossing. Completing the bridge would let an ancient army claim the living shore.

How it begins

The solicitor delivered Tovan's crown in a box for nails.

There were still three nails in it.

"I apologize for the packaging."

Tovan lifted the thin gold circlet with two fingers. It had no jewels and one visible repair.

"My uncle was a mason."

"Your uncle was also the sovereign of the western half of Saint Orra's Bridge."

"The western half doesn't exist."

The solicitor consulted his papers.

"That is one interpretation."

Below the workshop, the river moved through the town with the heavy patience of something that had outlived every contract concerning it.

Tovan had been forbidden to build within sight of that river after the mill bridge collapsed.

He had never expected to inherit part of it.

The deed required him to complete the missing span by midsummer.

Failure would transfer all associated rights to the occupants of the western shore.

"What occupants?"

The solicitor closed the nail box.

"I suggest you speak to a pilot."

Elsha Vale took him out at dusk.

She brought no lantern.

As they passed beneath the unfinished bridge, the air cooled. The last stone jutted into the mist like a sentence abandoned before its most important word.

On the opposite bank, metal flashed.

Helmets.

Hundreds of them.

The soldiers stood shoulder to shoulder in water that did not move around their boots.

Tovan knew their banner from a schoolbook.

The army had drowned three centuries earlier.

Elsha let the boat drift.

"They've been waiting for a prince."

He put a hand over the crown inside his coat.

"To bring them home?"

The river pilot looked at him for a long time.

"That," she said, "is what they call it."

A horn sounded from the far bank.

The soldiers raised their heads.

Tovan had spent eleven years wishing somebody would trust him to finish a bridge.

For the first time, he understood why his uncle had stopped.

Outline and characters

Develop this idea

A bridge-magic fantasy needs engineering limits as well as a magical oath. Establish load, current and foundations so Tovan's final design feels earned. The title should tempt him with something more personal than wealth, such as restored professional standing. Elsha can challenge the assumption that any connection is automatically good. Your version could use a road, tunnel or aqueduct, but the climax should distinguish opening a route from granting someone the right to conquer through it.
