The Owl Who Mistook the Sky for a Blanket
An adult owl pulls down a corner of the night sky to make his nest warmer. Returning it means discovering who else depends on the stars he has folded beneath his pillow.
ImagineYourBook writes a fresh draft from this idea.
How it begins
Oliver Owl was cold.
He had tried fluffing his feathers.
He had tried sitting on the other side of the nest.
He had tried telling himself that a fresh breeze was good for character.
His character remained chilly.
Above the oak tree, one corner of the night sky hung slightly loose.
It looked soft.
Oliver reached up.
The corner came down.
"Oh," he said.
He tucked it around the nest.
The stars made a lovely pattern.
One sat exactly where a button ought to be.
For the first time all evening, Oliver felt warm.
Below him, Fern Fox walked into a bush.
"That wasn't here yesterday."
The bush disagreed by scratching her hat.
At the pond, Duck turned the wrong way.
On the path, Badger looked up and found a large dark patch where the familiar stars should have been.
Fern followed the missing patch to the oak.
"Oliver?"
He peered over the edge of the sky.
"Good evening."
"Have you borrowed something?"
"A little blanket."
Fern looked at the enormous blue fold around his nest.
"It has the North Star on it."
"Does it need it?"
"We do."
Oliver loosened one corner.
Three small stars rolled into the crook of a branch.
He caught two.
The third settled on his beak.
Fern climbed onto a low stump.
"Would you like help?"
Oliver looked at the sky, the stars, and the warm place he had made without asking what else it belonged to.
"Yes, please."
Soon Duck brought a basket.
Badger brought a ladder.
Mouse brought a very small needle, which turned out to be exactly what the loose corner needed.
Oliver held the stars carefully while they worked.
His nest was cold again.
But below him, the woodland was full of voices, and none of them had left him to put the night back by himself.
